The same applies in politics. There was a time when candidates talked about their rivals with respect. Now its all muck raking and trying their best to destroy the other guys character and respectability. This leads exactly where the car makers knew all this negative stuff would lead. Zero respect by the American people for all candidates. Choosing to vote for the lesser of evils vs the best candidate, a worldwide view of the USA and its leaders as untrustworthy people who live immoral lives and just hope not to get caught.
Its a sad state of affairs in politics now.

McCain ran a very, very positive campaign in 2008. He didn't win.
I agree with you 100%. And this presidential campaign will be the worst we'll ever see, for a variety of reasons. (1) Obama will have close to a billion dollars (2) Obama can't point to his accomplishments, because he has almost none, his record is pathetic, all he can do is say "the other guy is worse", and (3) Obama has shown us, in 2008, that he has no qualms with mudslinging.
Romney can't let Obama hit him without hitting back. McCain tried to take the high road, and he didn't get any points for that.
I agree with you it's upsetting. This summer is really going to be something.
