"Gill Phase"
My buddy tells me that many plug builders go through a "gill phase", and then kind of give up on it because it isn't worth the extra hassle.
Here's my current version; it's just a 52 degree band saw cut and some red mylar tape.

I am a fan of the gill slits! Those look awesome! I would eat those if I were a fish!! Love the tape idea...very unique and a nice effect!!

Nice plug and gill detail. I paint gills on a lot of my plugs, and some fins too. I don't put red chin splashes on my plugs and I think the little bit of red on the gills helps trigger unsure bass. (Plus I enjoy doing it)

Thanks. This is my waking needle. I hope to make a gliding/walking version of this shape soon.
If you mean the big spook, I finally got that to work. I do need to figure a belly weight for it, though -- it rolls over a lot and I've missed a fair amount of fish on it because (I think) the belly hook spends so much time out of position |

Do you use a hand or air brush for the gill paint? Do you have a pic' we could see? |

Me?? I can try to post some tonight! I do the gill slit with and without paint and sometimes I do the painted on gill slit like CCBC!

If you meant me, I use a small artist's brush to paint my gill and fin details. Here is a pic of a bunch of mackerel I did for a swap showing some gill, pectoral fin, and mouth detail. And a yellow perch to show some different gill detail. (And no red chin splashes) I don't use an airbrush. I use a toothbrush and artist brushes to do all my painting.
I have only carved gills on a couple plugs but I like the look of your recessed gill and red mylar and may have to give it another try. |

bleeding gills
Great job on that lure, I like the mylar tape too. Try the bleeding gill, if you use scents you can spray the craft fur, in theory its should hold the scent longer.
