In the ocean not long at all. The site where you read that was probably talking about catching landlocked stripers. Buckies or shad or scup will work better in the ocean.

they were talking about salt water. I don't think that I could buy any live bait other than eels at a bait store specifically for salt water ehh? So i guess that is my next best bet since i dont have a boat.

You could go out and catch you own scup. There are certainly plenty of them around this year.

Adam use sandworms and go to any rockpile along the shore. You are sure to catch some scup.

I have never fished with hickory shad, but have witnessed someone catch a small striper casting and reteiving a dead shad.

I hope I hit the hickory shad this fall at my favorite river haunt, because if you can get shad and liveline them, you are guaranteed big bass. I had a 20 lber one weeked two years back, a 35 the next and dropped two that big the same day. Nothing beats a big live bait.

Hey I'd like to say so Ben, but nope, nothing beats a big live bait. I miss the days of live lining big horse bunker around, nothing more fun than watching the show unfold as the bunker starts to freak.

you can only use shiners in the river,,try for small macks near docks.where and how do you catch scup.sounds like a cool fish for catch and release..can they be found around the docks in boston or nearby?

i don't think so, KL. if you go fishing around the falmouth jetties or bourne's, you might catch plently scups and liveline for striper. however, it wil be a short cast because you don't want to injury a scup (correct me ont his, guys. im just a surfcaster). and jizz the scup with bunker oil.

yes, it can be reachable. use a kahal wide gap 1/0 hook for scup. it's better than using the standard scup hooks. this one saves a lot of scups' lives

not that one i recall. scups tend to populate around the cape. u can catch a pollock and live line it, but it weight a pound.

If you want to catch scup and liveline them for stripers, try
Westport harbor entrance. You can park at Horseneck beach
and walk down the beach to the harbor entrance. Use squid
strips for scup; works better than worms. Cut the strips
crossswise, not lengthwise.

i always cut a small strip of it. i had a scup taken on a whole squids on the cape before. boy, they dont stop until they are well fed.

Notaro, I think KL was looking for info on finding pollock around boston harbor. I would be interested in this too. Sometimes striper fishing is a bit slow for my daughter and anything that would break that up and could be used as bait would be cool.

You know not many stripers eat pollocks. It was a long wait for me to get striper to eat it. And I haven't got it on a pollock. KL should find them around Boston Harbor.
