Wireless router placement

I recently moved my wireless router to the cellar. I wanted it to get out of the way and close to the cable splitter.

On the main floor things work fine but my signal on the other side of the basement (finished part opposite the cellar) is terrible. I'm assuming it's because there's a thick stone rubble foundation inbetween.

Would a signal repeater into the finished part of the basement likely solve my problem? I'm thinking this may be easier than moving everything...

It should spence, when dealing with signal strength and levels think about holding your garden hose stright up, how it makes a mushroom. In my opinion thats the easiest analogy, if you add a signal degragating wall you will reduce that strength, however a repeater can and will help as long as you have some signal getting into that area and you can add the repeater in that area.

In the dirt cellar? She'd gladly approve that.

There's access in the middle of the stone wall so it would be easy to get a hard wire through. I already have cable and network running to my home theater. I'm thinking I can wire a repeater in and just position it under the stair which gives a pretty clean sight to basement devices.

I tried moving about the house and yard with my iPad and everything seems good upstairs and outside.

Though it does seem like the Apple devices record a stronger signal than PC's...weird.

Yup i will never own a Netgear again in my life, its an absolute piece of mass production garbage. DLink or Belkin is for me i will pay the extra $, and if you go with. A gateway cisco makes a nice unit.

I have DLINK WIFI'S never had an issue. Need a repeater though

I actually followed the tips on how to position a wireless router and it fixed all my problems

Good thing I didn't waste any money on that repeater.

I've bought a couple used Linksys WRT54G routers on fleabay then flash them with DD-WRT. It's like buying a high end Cisco Router for $15-20.

DD-WRT also gives you some flexibility in boosting transmission strength if you continue to have trouble with getting signal.
