I've seen a lot of anticipation for this reel in it's new mods and more reasonable sizes (and color coordinations :P )... I was wondering if someone would be interested in writing a review once they've grabbed a few lunkers on it...

Or if you have another piece of gear you would like to take a shot at reviewing. It's a great way to recommend a great product or to help someone steer clear when something turns out to be "less than desirable"...

Thanks,

John

That would be very welcome to see reviews of various reels/rods. We can certainly always post questions about equipment, but reviews from someone who gets to see just about all the equipment, would be a great resource and fun to read.

I'm thinking more like the regulars giving a quick or in-depth (depending on time and desire) review on equipment.. I think Mike's wife would kill him if he allocates any more time to, uh, business than he already is :P ... I'm hoping to add a few things when I get the time (but after I update other important sections of the site)...

Well, I've had the 7500 Nautil GV for about a week, and on Monday, I took a lot of waves while fishing in a 30 kt SW. No sand issues at all, not a single grain got up between the rotor and reel body. I would have had some minor grinding with both the VS and the cupped Penns. It spools line very well. Very smooth retrieve, but the drag really hasn't been tested yet. The black trim is a lot easier on the eyes to me at least, than the yellow Neptune trim. I ordered it from a site in Australia, and it was here in 5 days.

The Nautil includes two graphite spare spools, one is the same capacity as the aluminum spool, the other is basically useless except for maybe 30# Power Pro or 14# Fireline.

One little negative, at least for a guy used to manual ppick-ups. As is the case with the penn 6500, the external bail trip on the reel stem can block the bail from fully opening if the line roller is perfectly bertical. While I contemplate removing the bail and using the line roller as a pick-up, I had to get in the habit of turning the rotor the last quarter turn with my left hand to my waiting trigger finger. Not a big deal once you get used to it.

I'm not as pleased with the Tica Taurus 6000 I bought earlier this year. The gears went the second trip out. Tim replaced it with a spare body he had and returned the original to Tica. I took some of the braid off it to see what the useless Nautil spool would hold (not nearly enough) and the spool is corroded. The stuff came off the gold lip, but the base of the spool is corroded to the point of pitting, and it ain't coming out. That's obviously just from the water that was carried into the spool by the braid, as it has never been under water or even splashed. The aluminum on the spool is obviously not anodized, or it's poorly anodized.

I saw the Tica conventionals (Calcutta 400 and 700 size) at a show and like whenever I see new/different gear, I gots to buy it. Thankfully I took a close look as the more and more I checked it out, the more I became very unimpressed. It looked good and I suppose if that's who your market is but it just didn't feel like a Big Game and certainly nothing like a Calcutta (even though it's intended to look like one).. Definite, total, complete P.O.S. IMO. Didn't see the spinners but it sounds like your not exactly jumping with joy... I'm not suprised that Tim is standing behind it but I hope he doesn't get screwed by the rep or manufacturer (I think they're from PRChina ) Personally, I'm staying clear of those...

i snapped off a few plastics with my nautil until i figgered out that sometimes the bail was not completely opened due to the ext bail trip like mike said...quarter turn with the left hand, problem fixed...

completely non-nautil problem...this was the first time i put braid on a reel...learned after the first time out to tape my trigger finger or else let the braid carve it up after casting...something i'm sure the rest of you guys already knew...
