I have been marlin fishing for fun several times but I dislike the tournament formats which force the crew to touch the leader asap and then move on to the next fish.

Was wondering why I always see Marlin fisherman touch the leader, then cut it.

We did the same thing in a Sailfish tourney I fished in. I have a pic someplace of a sail I caught with the "wire" at the side of the boat just before release.
