The Hobbit

Got to see the Hobbit yesterday afternoon. A good movie. Like Star Wars where later events were in the first three movies and earlier events are in the last three movies , the whole 6 movie set will someday be viewed as if The Hobbit was the first movie. Follow me there?

Anyway , I liked it!!

I heard seeing it in 3D caused some nauseating effects becuase of the increased frames per second way they shot it.... watevs I have a natural remedy the hobbits know all about. Its the other thing they do well besides the drinking of ale

something clever and related to fishing

Longbottom leaf?

Yes I saw it in 3D but only because that was the next showing at the time I got there.

i seldom go to the movie theater. I usually rent it at Redbox when it comes out. However certain movies like this one that tie into books I've read and liked are worth the $12.

the 3D did at times have a little motion sickness tint to it but not anything beyond just noticing it. The biggest 3D effect I noticed was blinking when birds or similar came flying out of the screen at me. I honestly think the movie would have been every bit as good in 2D or whatever they call normal movies these days. In this case , its all about the story , not some fancy movie FX.

I was a little disappointed. It was way too long. I've read the Hobbit a few times and have no idea how they are going to stretch for another 2 movies. They're trying to hard to tie to the LOTR and there is no need to do that.

I'm with RIJ. Thought it was pretty mediocre, actually.

It seemed like they were trying SO hard to tie it into LOTR- unnecessary, it just detracted from the story. It's way too long- the movie smacks of hollywood producers saying "the last three movies made us a bajillion dollars, lets make this one a trilogy too!" Nevermind the fact that the Hobbit is about a half of the length of a single LOTR entry... They added too much unnecessary backstory to the Hobbit to stretch it out, and cut too much out of LOTR to fit it in...

Plus, I really think there was just too much fighting. I'm all for action, there was just gratuitous amounts. Part of the charm of the Hobbit was how they solve problems with wit versus weapons- the troll camp, for example. In the movie it's just "RAWR LETS HIT IT WITH AN AXE". I know they need to make it more "actiony" for the big screen but it seemed to do a disservice to the source material.

But for all of this, it's good to see Tolkien on the big screen. I'll still see the other entries because I'm a Tolkien nut. Definitely recommend just seeing the 2D version- there really wasn't anything added in the iMax 3d version other than a couple arrows whizzing by. Save the loot.

wow, good synopsis! I too thought it was too action oriented. I explained to my kids that the Hobbit was sort of a witty, humorous adventure story. All the LOTR tie ins detracted from the main story. Im with you also on Tolkien on the big screen, I really enjoy watching after growing up on these books.

Tie ins to the LOTR? All Tie ins go the other way IMO.

I do agree stretching it out to 3 movies is movie marketing. I also agree the movie is too heavy with the fighting. But I think that is how they plan to fill up 3 movies and keep people coming back for episodes 2 and 3. I'd much rather see the movies beefed up by including more Silmaril related background than all the fight scenes but for people who never read any of the books and are just movie goers , the fight scenes (action scenes in general) sell.

Saw it in 3D today...pretty good. Agree that 3 films is marketing, should have been two.

Much of the movie was done really well. Not sure if I'm sold on the 3D yet, at times it was incredible and at others a distraction. Especially during long camera pans things got fuzzy.

I didn't experience the high frame rate issue many early reviews were critical of.

Unfortunately, LOTR sort of did it all so there's not much left for the Hobbit to break ground on.

I thinks thats the catch - the Hobbit is an amazing story, it doenst need groundbreaking film making. The movie did not capture the warmth, whimsical nature of the book or the quest. The more I think about the movie the less I like it.

I saw it and had a good time with my son and daughter. Thought some of it- especially in the Goblin world was just bad--too much like a video game- But I love Gandalf and Radagast the Red. Bilbo is such a better Hobbit than Frodo. Love Goblins with english accents- speak much nicer than Orcs.

My daughter asked a good question- "how come in Lord of the Rings they didn't just get an eagle to fly them to Mordor and have Sam throw Frodo and the ring off the eagle into the volcano (daughter thought Frodo was a wimp). Good question.

I doubt the eagles would have done it. They will do favors but don't tend to get that deep into the affairs of men and elves.

Also, I'm not sure it would be easy to fly the ring into Mordor given the all watching eye.

yes the Brown.

I told my daughter that the Winged Nazguls could pose a problem- and besides Peter Jackson would then not have enough material to be able to make 3 movies.
