BlackEye,
Some suggestions on all darters, not just mine.
I find that changing the retrieve works much better than just cast and crank.
Cast out, reel slowly, some darters you will feel them thump thump thump, others you just feel the line taught. Rasie your rod tip 6 inches to make the plug swim a little faster, continue reeling and lower your rod tip. Repeat.
Stop and go works well, along with a steady retrieve with small jerks of the rod tip.
Sometimes the fish want it a certain way, othertimes they just dont care. Sometimes wood is good, sometimes they just want to eat plastic superstrikes.
A few weeks back Peter from the Edge and I put a real hurting on fish up to 20+lbs under a full moon with heavy cloud cover. Peter was fishing one of my darters with the bunker paint job while I lost my black and purple to a fish that wanted to head to block island. I had to resort back to a blue superstrike, seeing that Pete refused the cash offers I was making for that bunker colored darter.
Lessons to be learned: 1. Turn more plugs for myself!! 2. Vary the retrieve until you find what they want. At one point they would only hit in the wash right in front of us, just stop reeling and let hte plug thump thump thump in the whitewater...... 3. Figure out a way to hypnotize friends in the middle of the night in order to obtain lure of choice.
