This is exactly how I built my workbench... Cheap 2x4s, screws, black paint and MDF top with 3 coats of urethane... Rock solid....

There is no question I will never build drawers either.. These tool boxes have been fantastic.. Just make sure you screw them to the shelf then you can have all the drawes open at once with no worrries...
