Fish photos with gps info

OK it was brought up that if you take a fish picture with your iphone for instance, and you post it on the interweb someplace, that cyber detectives can locate the position by using the info your iphone attaches to the pic. While I have not done it or would know how to, I believe it is possible. How do I keep this from happening to me? Is there a way of deleting that info from the pictures before posting one?
Or do I have to shut off that feature in my phone now that I got with the 21st century and have the lifeproof case to bring it fishing with me.
I don't need the masses ascending on any spots because of my lack of tech skills.

any thoughts?

Bruce, on the iPhone, you just go into settings, click on privacy and then turn off location setting for camera and any other features you don't want it used for.

using something other than their software , crop and resize the picture and then save as and then rename it. You usually have to resize it to post it anyway. I use Thumbsplus usually.

i have been reading READING
and i know about this....
let's see ....how to explain it ....
ya know how you can take 3 or 4 pictures of a skyline
and then later "stitch" them together to create a wide angle view?

well as seen on TED
every picture is being saved in this enormous data base
and it is auto stitching them altogether so you have a 3D 360 degree view.
so, pictures taken of say the CANAL (for example)
taken years apart are being auto collaged
as if they are a PUZZLE piece from thousands of photo's

Wouldn't you have to first catch a fish for this to be a problem?
You should be OK, Bruce.

All electronic devices that take pictures have a setting that can be disabled. Depends on the device where the setting (called geotags within pictures & videos) is located.

Anyone watch Mythbusters? Check out this article - http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/12/te...sics.html?_r=0

Thanks

from that article Moses:
----------------
“I’d say very few people know about geotag capabilities,” said Peter Eckersley, a staff technologist with the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco, “and consent is sort of a slippery slope when the only way you can turn off the function on your smartphone is through an invisible menu that no one really knows about.”

Indeed, disabling the geotag function generally involves going through several layers of menus until you find the “location” setting, then selecting “off” or “don’t allow.” But doing this can sometimes turn off all GPS capabilities, including mapping, so it can get complicated.
---------------

sounds harder than it should be

I have a camera, it is not waterproof and it is too big, remember I carry a big plugbag but it's full of plugs no room for a big camera.
I do sometimes catch fish George, I will fish that small darter you gave me until I catch a fish on it and might just take a pic of it for you.

I do re-size the pictures and save them, then do the upload thing here before posting, does that get rid of the geotag? I suspect not.

Because of how the data is stored, this method is not foolproof.

Some new cameras have GPS...and they do tag.

Like someone mentioned...disable it.

I have not investigated this stuff, but it might be in the info header or embedded in the format.

You should really just stick with this : http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripert...e-sharpie.html

Your catch rate will improve drastically, he can photo shop you with a cow on the Eiffel Tower, or even somewhere in Vegas. Imagine a picture holding a 32" slob on the top of Ceasar's Palace?

If you simply resize and save I agree but doesn't cropping it then resizing and saving under a new name create a totally new file ? I'm not sure.

All that stuff is stored in the EXIF data. If you upload your photos on facebook, they're fine- FB doesn't u/l that data. Don't know about other image hosting sites...

I couldn't view any exif data from this site either. I tried with about 8 uploads and only get a message that says the data has been totally or partially removed from the pic. That doesn't mean all pics here have the info removed, or does it? Maybe those pics just weren't tagged?

all you need to do is shut off your google maps on your smart phone. Most smart phones have "maps" that can show your location to friends and/or tag your locations in a picture. Just shut off the feature or if it asks "where was this picture taken?", just say frickin Disney or something....lol. But shutting off your google maps and sometimes facebook settings will take care of that and your wife won't know.....I mean people won't know where you were. lol

BINGO! Just don't post them in the first place and know one will know your position.

If everyone sends me pics of their fish over say 45lbs, I will go through each one to see if the gps info is available. I will let you know if I find that info when I am finished with the project so that you can act accordingly.

No, no, no. we’re 30… 30, three zero.

Android 4.0 and up should just have an option in the camera settings that allows you to turn off geotagging your photos. No need to turn off GPS, location services, or anything else. At least mine does, but I have 4.2

Trying again...
(Don't ask how I got there)

Your right it seems to strip off the GPS data. I know I have downloaded them before, I did it last summer. When I have time I will try to figure it out.

Did you do it on THIS image posted on SB or a prior version upon which you uploaded? Makes a difference , maybe?

All my attempts showed no original photo/camera info.....not that I'm a (good) hacker but like a challenge.

If info is there, I'm sure Raven will find it!

you have to download the image to your computer. THEN open it and examine the properties (scroll all the way down)

BTW I think you can extract the exif data from FB images, but you have to download the image to your machine, you can not simply right click on a FB image you need the file on your machine so you have the right privileges.

Isn't this the 70+ lber taken down in Virginia or Maryland that was making the rounds earlier? Sure looks familiar. Spawning season so had to be released or at least thats how I remembered it.
