I am surprised that the public is largely unaware of these worms. I think if they were demand would shrink and then maybe some of the comm fishing pressure for them would lessen. This would be a good thing.
Maybe we should post large photos of wormed fish outside the fish markets and grocery stores. That would be a novel form of protesting.
Several fisherman I know have stopped fishing for them and don't eat them because of the worms.
Then again...I remember eating an ear of corn when I was kid and it had a couple worms. I told my mother...her response was Ooooh, you have a good one! , A good one I said? Well if you were a worm would you eat a bad ear of corn?...just eat around the worms
I wonder what is causing them target cod and not flounders and other bottom fish? Could it be location?

I've always thought that many species have worms. It's natural as far as I know. Squeeze lemon over a previously frozen swordfish steak and they will rise out of the meat. Part of the prep for me. (Freaks out my other half though...) Can't say if this is something that is "new" or on the increase though. But it is why I don't eat sushi, and I am often asked why. Sushi for me is for when I am in a liferaft and out of necessity.

I put the fillets in the fridge for the night and the worms seem to come out or to the top of the meat. Just pick them out and all is good.

Buy a freezer that will freeze to 7 degrees below zero..will kill the worms....that is what real shusi food places do with their raw fish.
Most of the worms come from codfish eating seal feces off the bottom...the futher away from the seal population the less worms.
Buy pork chops from your local grocery...pour some coke on it...see the parasites or use paper towel with coke and rub on your cheek or forehead and U may see parasites

Yep... they're actually not cod worms per se, they're really seal parasites. Cod are just a vector so they can end up back in the seal, the final host.
Yet another thing we can blame the massive seal population on

Sounds like a nice TFCTFN contest, who has the most parasites coming out of their forehead!
