In mho this is the best striper web site anywhere. There are more truly expert fisherman here with years of experience that are willing to share there methods and ways than anywhwere.
The idea of this site, from my limited experience ,is to learn from others so you can improve your knowledge and catch fish, not a substitute for putting your time in,or give you the latest hot spot to run down and have opening day crowds.
I have seen places over run ,trashed, and closed to the public because some fishing magazine did everything but give the gsp coordinates on a hot spot.Ruins it for everyone. How many times have i seen a guy with a fish on during a blitz with a cell phone on his ear at the same time, and within 15 minutes so crowded there are guys in your waders.
Technology is great, but learning, exploreing and putting in your time is what makes fishing worthy of the stripers we are after.
It is a privlidge to learn from this site. Just my hmo.

Spot Filters?
Is it possible to have filters that ^&^%^%# < do that when a spot is mentioned.
Since all spots are known by someone it wouldn`t be hard to build them into filters would it? (i`m not a techie)
The problem seems to be when someone says a known spot is hot at a particular time/date.
Naw...never mind

Don't want to speek for the Webmaster, but as a techie myself I would say it would be doable, just add them to the list of currently filtered words.
As long as someone provides a list of the spots, it would be doable.
I'll volunter to collect them Kidding--
If it's that big a deal, why not tell people when they sign up about proper SB ediqute?

I think in the past I ran into a message board that used the exact same setup as SB does and you were unable to get into any of the forums without signing on? John, does this program allow you to set it up that way? Might get rid of alot of the lurkers!!

Bud8,
The problem there is that you could almost never get new members. I'm guessing you lurked a little before signing up as most of us did. The thing is most people don't jump in the deep end before checking the temp. The ones that do I'd just as soon
didn't

I hear what your saying but I dont know about the majority of members here but I was told about the site from other members while fishing and it was just a natural thing to join?

I agree,
The bigger problem is the 'puter guys that just do a google search
( like me ) and come up with this site. It's not like the VFW or Elks ( did I leave out the Eagles) where you have members bring friends in and you get to check them out to see if they may be a good fit. I guess it could be but that might defeat the whole idea.

Yeh, we could, but it is a tough thing to do - not technically, but believe it or not, we really do try to keep it open. By closing it off, we might not have the next person we enjoy meeting ever sign up. We just need to find the proper balance, and that's the tough thing to do...
We need to grow but we don't want to grow fast, whenever that happens and we have one of these bursts or members, things tend to get squirelly and hopefully we can then find the balance again.
If we close it off, it becomes stagnant, if we flood it, a lot of the long time regulars get turned off (there are people that have been here for years), in the middle is that hard balance to strike...
But we DO have a good lot of people here and that makes it worth while...

I gotta tell ya the internet is a tough thing. I try when I post not to give any great specifics on spots, as I have seen in the last several weeks fishing the cape. One spot we fish every year which only used to have a handful of guys fish it for the last 8 years, well BC & I were there last Thursday fishing an evening tide and honest to god there must have been 18 - 20 guys walk in. It was totally freakin me out, I said to Bill what is there a freakin sign out at the end of the street or something??????? And this was a week day. Can't freakin believe it. Well there is another site which has about 200 logged on at a time and imagine how many lurkers??? They gave freakin directions and everything. That spot will most likely been gone forever soon. Its a real shame!!!! Remeber this isn't the only fishing site out there, Its just the BEST ONE!!!
Most people that know Bill & I, have been put on alot of places to fish and how to fish them, we have our own guide service to share our many years of knowledge with people who want to learn. But people must remember also that just because there were fish here today doesn't mean they will be there tomorrow, FISH SWIM, I had a guy come in that evening and he mite as well have stepped into my waders he was that close to me because BC & I were hooking up and nobody else was. You must also remember that just because there are fish there doesn;t mean that everybody that shows up to that spot knows proper fishing etiquette or even how to cast for that matter. SO YES BURNING SPOTS IS A BIG ISSUE!!! Newbies need to remember that some of us put in ALOT of time fishing and learning by working for the fish, not just asking where & when and then going into a nice secluded area then callen all your buddy's and telling them about it too.
If you what to know how to work a lure, rig a rod, fish different things, bait, eels, lures, ect. that is one thing. But please keep spots to broad area's not specifics. Just rememeber that we all become experienced thru time put in on the water. Those who burn spots today some day will regret it when they have no room to fish anywhere!!!!
As for the fishing, head to the cape or RI, they are everywhere, just try putting some time in!!!!!!! You will eventually hook up and you will definatly learn from the experience. This is just the beginning of the season, its just gonna get better from here on out!!! NOW GO RIP SOME LIPS and spend less time on the computor, you will definatley catch more fish that way.

Fisherwoman -
Mike P - I saw this post yesterday but didn't have time to read it and thought the same thing - they went a named a spot after Ben!
Hey, JohnR, if we get together this week I'll give ya a beta version of my latest venture, the Craftco Internet SpotBlocker - 30 day free trial.
You'll never have to worry again about spot burning if someone posts anything about **** ****, ***** ***, or *** ******.
See what I mean....

The "Being Logged In To Be Able to See the Boards" Thing
Just my $0.02......there is another site that now has that policy (or at least it did last time I checked). That particular site was the FIRST one I joined and actively participated in many years agp. And in fact, I was a moderator there for awhile.
One day a few months ago, after I had cleared my cache and deleted some cookies, I went back over there to see what was up. Lo and behold, suddenly, you couldn't get into the boards unless you were logged in.
And even though it would have only taken a few keystrokes to type in my username and password, I said "WTF!", left, and haven't been back since. For some reason, and I'm not sure exactly why, it just got my goat.
So, I DON'T think that is a good idea......
Carry on.........
