And without major surgery/modifications (like adding a deck to keep the water out) most 12 meters would likely sink in offshore conditions. Can't imagine taking one to St Maarten on its own bottom....

I think Valiant, and maybe Heritage are housed up here.

Well that explains why I can't find the 4th one.

I'll look for the other 2 this week at lunch, I love cruising through to no think about something IT related for about 20 min and the drive back and forth along Burma Road is relaxing to

i am talking about the avg conditions,,,,,,

i am sure that there have been many storms that could sink
these racing vessels out there; but, generally speaking, isn't the Pacific much calmer than the Mighty Atlantic??

what the frick do i know anyways,,,,,,,,,,,
the only sailing i've helmed was a 17' Prindle(sp?) on Lake Walden outside of Houston. or as rail meat for some of the local yokels out of Ida's. wish i knew more and sailed more to be honest. it's "a little" above my pay scale for the time being,,,,,,,,, still, i love to watch The Cup and i do believe that it would be GOOOOD for Newport!!

I have a friend who has been a captain on the 12's for over 10 years. And while they are not new, they are well maintained, regal vessels. He has some bone chilling stories about transporting boats back from St.Maarten.I've been down there to visit him before. If a 12 year old girl can sail around the globe,it can make transport look sane.

Doing an ocean passage on a 12 from the mid 70's to the 80's would be akin to fishing the edge of the continental shelf in a center console. You can do it, but.............

I went to all but race 7 in 1983. I sailed out for race 7 with the fleet but it was postponed do to lack of wind so i sailed from the race grounds back to guilford Ct. It was a great experience to see the whole scene in newport. The Aussies are great party animals. I thought it was good that Australia won and even better when Conner won it back from them. There were some great cup defenders leike Intrepid and courageous and Freedom. Many thought the older freedom was a more capable all around boat than liberty which of course lost it. Austarlia ll was a big inovation. It also had a great crew and captain. What Stars and Stripes did to develop a boat to win it back in 87 was really a phenominal show of engineering , sailing and financing efforts. They built 3 trial horses then incorporated all the best in Stars and Stripes 55 which was a remarkeable boat for sailing off the coast of Austarlia. Conner , although disliked by many many many... was a great captain and redeemed himself by winning it right back in 87.

After that it all went to hell with rules becoming court battles and really stupid boats being built. That era ruined the reputation of the Cup as we knew it.

Anyway , its not coming to newport. All that infrastructure that handled it in 83 is all shopping centers and condos now. i didn't like the whole Fort Adams thing. leave that for the everyday people. Let the gazzilionaires buy and develop private property.

Thats #3
Its one of the aussie boats (I believe Australia II).
#4 is in the 2nd shed, unless they moved it.

Is Shindig still right at the gate? (the blue hulled sled)

yes it is. so that's 4.

there is no markings on the white one at all, its the size and the odd keel that gives a distinct re-look

Il Moro is for sale (The red IACC that sat at Hinckley/Hood for a thousand years) on the west coast for $150k.

One of her keel bulbs is still at Hinckley.

Yup. Some "team building"/day sailing company bought her and realized there's no money in "team building" anymore.

That was a case of some idiot buying it and trying to afford it.
Most of the sailors are still around racing on sleds and in the Med.

AC is more of a side thing these days for crews/drivers.

Anyone remember when one of the guys from another country got arrested for scuba diving under Connor's boat to take a picture of the keel and got arrested? A friend's friend got arrested for public drunkedness that same night and ended up being handcuffed to the guy. They had to do a perp walk the next day while the guy was still in his wetsuit. He made a few papers.

You got it wrong. The diver was trying too look at australias new revolutionary winged keel. We knew their keel was different, but didn't know about the wings.

Thats correct. A lot of effort went into getting a look at Australia ll's keel. I remember the diver incident.

I wonder why it was determined that the diver had broken the law and what law he broke?
