Raven -
after you cut it down are you going to spray something? or else it will grow back? curious because I have been waging the battle against it for many moons.....

Arrow it spreads like CRAZY

No other plant has the Audacity to spread
like poison IVY IMHO

it tunnels under everything

via roots....chokes trees to death

and i swear it makes Pollen too...

Euel Gibbons the plant man long ago
was so whacky he'd eat it "Just" In springtime
to create a resistance to it in his own body
and i think it killed him...

dogs walk in it
you pet the dog
and you've got it

Raven,
I have read this entire thread and I can't stop iching! I can't go near poison ivy... Every year we pickup poison ivy killer by the gallon and it comes back every year....
Example, went to the canal last year, dropped back for a cast hit a bush. Take a look at the leaves and step on them just in case. Three days later poison ivy all over me, (on the boots and the lure)????
That's one way to keep me off the canal, cover it in poison ivy!

Mike

well Mike

that's why i am so fond of Brewer's yeast
the nutritional yeast left over from making beer

because it sends poison ivy blisters away fast...

don't forget to take extra vitamin C and get pink
with calamine lotion

it pays to wear a long sleeved thin shirt to bed
because otherwise you scratch and spread it in your sleep

to kill poison IVY

there's three methods to win the war......

First you have to locate the BIGGEST vines usually growing
up trees and they have very easy to distinguish brown hairy
roots growing (attaching itself) to the BARK
and CUT them clean with a very sharp axe so as not to splatter
sap back at you......requiring one clean chop.

This is because they (the biggest vines) make tiny blue berry clusters that birds eat
and crap everywhere spreading it all over the place.

Second you have to smother it (a patch) to death with black plastic
to prevent any sunlight from getting thru then cover that with
rock , sand, dirt or whatever heavy material you have around to anchor it down with
......so it won't blow away.

Third ...you spray it with round up weed killer on sale at wally world for $15 buckaroonies
in its own pump up and spray bottle.

this is a systemic weed killer that is absorbed through the leaves and goes down
to the roots and kills it. The spring leaves are easier to penetrate with the weed killer
because it is new growth.

Usually you need 4 consecutive days of sunshine afterwards for it to work
GOOD or you'll have to re-apply it again....

On this property there were hundreds of stalk vines standing up
30 inches tall trying to compete with the barb wire like bittersweet vine so i chose to cut them low
to the ground to make smothering out that much easier plus i am spraying any leaves i see.

next, i will dig holes every 30 inches and plant sunflowers
and cor n to shade it out and create a wind break at the same time.

For me: all i have to do is look at poison ivy and flip it the bird
and the next day i have it.... so it's a real WAR
