Rhode Island Poaching Problem

I have had it with the lack of enforcement we currently have in Rhode Island. This past weekend along with many other weekends the past month there has been a pretty good striper bite at Beavertail for shore bound anglers. The problem is that most of the fish being landed and kept are sublegal fish. I was down at Beavertail last evening and as I walked up over the bluff I saw a mid 20's asian gentleman landing a small bass. I have witnessed this person keeping illegal fish several times in the last few weeks along with his friends. I walked up and struck up a conversation with him as he was putting a rope through the fishes gills to keep the fish. I made the comment that the fish was a short fish and needed to be let go. He said to me his tape measure was broken and that the fish was legal. I loved the my tape measure was broken comment as he is standing there holding a sewing tape measure, the kind that rolls up in your hand, no working parts just numbers. I took out my tape and measured the fish for him 25". He then went down to the water and let the half dead bass go. This guy was walking around with a $500 Vanstaal reel, $300 surf rod and $250 Aquaskinz Jacket it is obvious he has more money than he has brains. The other problem Im seeing on a daily basis is people leave in the morning with a limit of fish only to return in the afternoon to take another limit. The problem is so bad down at Beavertail if the DEM had just one officer to work the park they could write several tickets a day for this location if not more. What gets me is that there is a new DEM facility in Jamestown and in the 4 years of me living there I have never seen a officer even drive through the park. Not wanting to just gripe about our problems I want to offer a solution. The state should start a deputy DEM program. Individuals interested in furthering the conservation efforts and protection of our fish and game could get deputized and have ticket writing powers only. Other states have tried this and been successful as a volunteer staff suplements the work our DEM officers do on a daily basis and gives the DEM more coverage. Until we can do this the only other solution is to expose these violators by calling the DEM and reporting them as well as using the internet forums to offer descriptions of them and confronting them when it makes sense to. What does everyone else think?

Striperhound - we feel your pain, but you gotta call this # 401-222-2284 when you see it. And yes - 9 times out of ten there won't be a response...

Uh, wasn't me. I was up on the Cape this weekend.

But I am headed up to BT right now.

You sure you got your description right? Last I checked I was the only one wearing Aquaskinz and fishing with a VS reel up there. And a green Surfcaster plug bag.

Most of the guys you mention wear rain parkas, shorts, and sling backpacks and $50 Sports Authority rigs.

I release all sublegal fish promptly.

And I yell at all the other Asian guys who don't pick up their trash and take sublegal fish.

Angry

Striperhound,

I think you are making this chit up.

Either you are a troll, or attaching faces you've seen in the past with events that happened yesterday.

I don't disagree with your observation of rampant poaching by Asian dudes (predominantly Vietnamese and Cambodian) - I've beeyotched about it in the past. Here. Publicly.

However, your description is basically of me. You are a full of bovine feces and a mother fakker if you think I'm poaching fish there. So fakk you if you are lying.

Next time you see this fella, say hello and get his name.

The only thing I have to say is that if WeeWee was using plugs it might have been him, if he was using eels I doubt it though

Hound, I do want to give you more of the benefit of doubt but on your first post, WeeWees description does sound like a troll

Funny, I was getting eels Saturday at a B&T near me, the owner had some pictures near the cash register of he and another guy holding fish. I could not beleive they were holding up stipers about 20 - 24" !!! They looked really proud!
I was shocked but did not say anything (wuss).

fishweewee.

Sorry if the equiptment description sounds like you, no intentional harm meant. I am sure of the description down to the last detail for certain. last night Beavertail 4:00 pm right side of light house looking south. Asian male/gold 200 Vanstaal reel, aquaskins jacket fish caught on a Tattoo Spook in silver pogie color. Same man fished next to me for 1 hour Bluefish blitz on east side of lighthouse shoreline from 5:00 to 6:00 pm throwing 2 oz deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s. Man in question said he bought Tattoo spook at Saltwater Edge Fly shop. My memory is not foggy like the weather was yesterday.

Striperhound, I commend you for speaking up and measuring the short so he would release it. Tape measure broke, HA that's a good one.

Ya have to admit, with your first post the description was close enough to FWW. Oh well, you know what happens when one assumes

Saltheart I agree... Out of state trouble maker, yes..
But poacher.. no way (and I dont even know him... off the board)

BTW at B-Tail in my usual spot last week, came over a small drop to a group of people in the same ethnic group in this discussion. keeping every scup that hit the rocks 5in, 10in, didnt matter, no tape measure came out (must have been broken )but unless they have a magic bucket that transports the scup back to the ocean, they all went home w/ these guys.. I'm young (mid 20's)and consider myself fairly rugged, but 4 guys v. me... I kept fishing and prayed to the RI Gods that DEM would magically appear as I dont fish w/ a cell phone...

Can we pull a Charlie Bronson move and take the law into our own hands ?

I mean after they are thrown in the sea and left for the crabs there would be (in this case) a VS set-up that I just "Found" on the beach.

Kind of a Salvage rights thing.

Or the lords payback for a job well done ?

Now I am not trying to give anyone any ideas just musing about a possible scenario........

try ANY morning at Watch hill light! you will be amazed. sure, keeping alot of fish is ones personal choice and i have no gripe with that as long as it is withing the law. the issue i take is the keeping of shorts and of leaving trash all over. look at the area to the west of the tip of WH. it is full of sandworm boxes and squid boxes. even the trash wouldn't be so bad, but it attracts some of the biggest and nastiest earwigs and rats you have ever seen!

I sent an e-mail to the RI DEM almost a month ago about the keeping of short fish problem and also the garbage problem, and even invited the persons whom I e-mailed to check out our fishing web site(s) and see our feelings on this matter. no reply as of yet.
so if these guys are not busting people for poaching, not busting poeple for littering, and not sitting at their computers answering honest questions, where the **** are they? and how are they justifying a paycheck?

Is it good, or is it Sofa King good?
