My grandmother spent her childhood on Block Island - in the early 1900's.
Her father was in the coast guard life saving service. On his way home from work he would stop at what is now the Ballards dock and pick up dinner by fishing for it. It usually took less than a 1/2 hour to get enough fresh fish to feed a family of five. Not just stripers either, she said he sometimes got small tuna off the dock.
