Hmmm, I was thinking the same thing.
If we had a continuous thaw and gradual warming trend this spring, I would have been out there weeks ago.
However, with the spike in cold temps and runoff from snow, I would venture to guess that your chances will be optimized on a warm and sunny day.
Wouldn't hurt to head out this weekend.
Trick is, CHUM HEAVILY. Use Berkley scents, wet catfood, and crushed fresh mussels to attract the flatties to your hook.
My favorite bait is sand worms.

This might be a new one for you, it certainly was for me. I took a seminar from Saltwater Sportsman Mag a couple of weeks ago. They mention one of the things that attracts Flounder better than anything else is Corn. Yup, take a can of Green Giant (or brand X) corn and dump it over the side ..... be sure to open the can first.
None of them seemed to know for sure what attracted them, but they (about 1/2 doz charter captains from RI to Maine) all agreed it works great. Who know, it's not like they see it in their natural habitat.
Can't wait to try it out.

Rec,
It works beacuse of the color of the corn, yellow, like the inside of the mussels they love to snack on. Same reason lots of folks paint their sinkers yellow.

Also on some of the hooks you will notice a yellow ball above the hook that looks just like a piece of corn, now I know why.

I don't know if the flounder are biting, but this is the season for sweet flounder love, here's the latest and greatest regs (MA) for the flatties:
Winter Flounder (5) Mar 01 - Apr 30 12 inches 3 fish
May 01 - Feb 28 12 inches 8 fish

I would rather just wait for the schoolies to come, the numbers of winter flounder are so bad you can sit there all day and are lucky to get 1 or 2. At least in Rhody it has not been too good for them from shore the last couple of years. I don't know maybe boat guys are having better luck?

Last year in the pond the bite was off. Had only a handful of good fishing days out of many attempts. But this year I'II still bring my flounder rod to work with me only to break up some of the work monotony. I've waited all winter to feel the tap tap of a flounder a-biting on my line.  |

The other thing that works really well for chum is....are you ready for this....rabbit pellets.

Are winter flounder found in the same areas as fluke? I know a good flukin spot or two, would winter flonder be there now? When do fluke show back up?

use double strike
the best chum to use for flounder and cod is double strike chum with the cracked corn added to it. it comes in a plastic tube and was put into production last year. to see how effective this stuff really is go to www.doublestikechum.com the pictures on the home page are last years field testing results in boston harbor. also check out www.seabait.com the bait of the future good luck petesantini |
