any chartr capts use herring

I'd like to try some live-lining for stripers this year. Anyone know any captains who typically liveline herring or shad for stripers, in CT or RI or MA?

Hi Jamie M, you will find that some other charter captains as well as Bill & Jules use live lining fishing with herring and mackerel in Boston harbor, MA. All depends on the availablity sp? of the bait. When the fish move into the harbor around the 2nd week of May till the end of June, Live Mackerel is the way to go, then we concentrate on using live herring. Hope this helps!!!

There is a closure on herring in CT. Capt. Blaine Anderson fishes live porgie and sometimes hickory shad in the eastern end of LIS. He launches out of Niantic, and his rates are good. I don't want to post his website here, but you could PM me. He caught a couple of monsters last year, including a 52" length 32" girth hog that was released (no weight taken). I've fished with him a few times, I got my biggest last year at 49 inches on his boat.

Slapshot, if you have had success with someone of some product, it's OK to post the link. We only frown upon people selfishly pushing their own business (spamming) or conspiring with others to push someone by generally taking advantage of the open nature of the boards...

And like mentioned above, it's illegal in CT to use live or dead herring. You night experience it on a Rhody trip but for now, not in CT

There you go, Jamie. Try Bill and Jules or Mike Bouselah of Ave Maria Charters in Boston Haba. They are well-recommended here. There is one you can try is capt. lou abate.

When we can't get live mackerel we switch to chunking herring!!!
Here in Gloucester we have 2 herring boats that take out there trip here every other day. So herring is easily available for us!!!
When chuming you want to chum using differant sizes so that the fish just don't key on one size!!!

If you don't have a boat you can also chunk from shore!!!

Yes, there is a herring closure in CT. We do not use herring live or dead anymore. I have seen a few of the shore guides keeping them in pens at the dock. I am told they get an import permit for this. Who knows, they may be breaking the law.

Blaine's website is www.fishingct.com

He does not use herring, but does offer trips in the CT River during the herring run using artificials.

i will vouch for Blaine as a stand-up guide. well worth the trip to CT if you want in on some nice fish. he also has a pretty good record on the CT river spring run for those that like throwing artificials.

Flyrod,
Thems a different kind of herring! Sea herring vs the river herring we're talking about here.

Is it illegal to cast net herrings in rockport? I don't do those, but I have seen some kids who work for a lobsterman and busisnessman, and a anlger in the shack. he is a friend of mine. I once tried to literally catch a herring using a blue.white atom popper which i thought it was a striper. that was two years ago!

BM - you can see pics of both fish on Blaine's website. My 49" fish was caught 9/5, and Blaine's hawg was in late October. The 49" fish was a racer with no belly at all. She was released without a weight taken - this year I have the 60 pound Rapala scale (modified to open wider). I would have guessed right around 40. I caught two 48" fish in the previous year that weighed 39 and 40 pounds. It is just my luck that my largest are usually on the diet that Oprah should be on.

you can purchase live herring thru some bait shops in CT. You have to keep the reciept to provide proof for the DEP

I don't believe that is correct (herring live in Ct shops). I sat at a CTDEP presentation last month sponsored by CCACT. We were told by the DEP that the only way to fish live (river run) herring in CT was with an importation permit which can be obtained at DEP headquarters. There is a fee and it is good for three days. You can fish frozen herring from the shops, and a receipt is a good idea. The permit allows you to use live herring obtained from somewhere other than CT waters. I suppose it it possible that one or two shops are offering herring caught outside CT to permit holders, but why would anybody go through the hassle?

Tomahawk Charters ring a bell? That dude gets some awsome #'s every year fishing live herring with many #50's I hear. They have what it takes of getting and holding the bait. Not sure this year but they've been at the shows.

Tomahawk Charters,

I sometimes wish I were also a Native American (Buddy Vanderhoop) and have sole rights to an awesome herring run on the vineyard.

With that arrangement you can't help but to get good #'s every year with many 50#'s.

Would be like owning the Run at the Canal to just yourself, that would be something.
