Help me to select leader material for my money

Hey guys, I know this thread has been discussed in the past. I went and surfed the previous threads on leaders. There are many pros and cons on fluro and mono, and what kind of material y'all use. However, I am thinking about switching to big game supreme mono for plug leaders and bait leaders and use different triline solar or others for running line. And I'm on a moeny millage now. So I am hoping that all of you could vote on the poll and help me to spend my money wisely on leader material. And please state your imput. One majority will be on my shopping list.

When using eels or fishing in clear shallow water I'II run a floro leader. Ande floro is a good deal. But I usually just use clear mono 40-50Ib test. I use Sufix, but I think any of the major premium lines would do just fine. I buy my leader material in 1/4 pound spools. I also know guys who fish with yozuri--both running line and leaders--and they swear by it. For floro, i think that Seaguar is good but way to steep of a price to use night in and night out.

Not if you are buying seagar fluro leader material from wal-mart. I used yo-zuri hybrid fluro leader for running line, they don't cast well. I tried using it for leader. They crimp and tangle if using a 20 or 30 lbs test.

I used fluro excusively, but I hear about using heavier running mono line for leaders have been a success and save money. Goosefish, I have a question, if you use a conventional setup for surf and use a shock leader like big game supreme, would u use the same material like big game supreme u used for a shock leader as a plug/bait leaders? Or different one?

I used triplefish and it seemed fine to me. the knot tying is so-so for me bec they can be loose if i didnt pay attention to it.

ML, what wld happen if you went broke and cannot afford seagar? what are your options for repleacing seagar?

Notaro--when I use my conv. my shock leader is my leader, so say I'm using 20-25Ib mono as my running line and I have a 15 foot shock leader of 40Ib test then that's it. I don't use floro for my shock leaders because of the lenght--I'd go broke. I've caught plenty of big fish using simple mono for my shock leaders. I try to keep my shock leader and the running line to be the same brand. So if you using Big Game for a running, then I'd use Big Game for your shock leader. This gives me the knot confidence that I like to have. Uni to uni for the connection. I hope this helped, not sure if it did.

Goosefish, it helps. Thanks. I can use a berkely mono big game supreme of 50 lbs or clear mono of 50 lbs spool for my leader. I used a xl solar green mono 25 lbs test for my running line on my abu garcia ct bg 7500 no levelwind. It casts well and costs well for me.

I just got a 7500 myself, went out and threw it the other day. Casts great for a big reel. I put 25Ib Big game on mine. The nice things about using conventionals is that we don't have line twist issues. So I tend not to use swivels, unless I'm fishing eels, or chunking.

How come you don't use a swivel on the shock leader and your bait/plug leader? I would unless you beg to differ...

If I'm using using a 40Ib shock leader then I don't need to add a swivel and another shot of 40Ib mono to the plug. I just run the 40Ib shock leader right from my uni knot to the plug. I use swivels, but when I'm plugging or jigging with a conventional I never use them.

Then I would be using a duolock snap for plugging because I already have a shock leader that serves me in any fishing situation except for chunking and eeling, correct?

That's what I do. I never go below a 40Ib shock leader, even though my distance may suffer some. With a conventional if I really wanted distance then I'd run 17Ib mono, a 30Ib shock leader---then a swivel, leader, snap, plug.

I got a 25 lbs xl solar green triline running line w/ 40 lbs big game surpreme on my abu. i tied a duolock snap on it for plugging.

Thats why they said, the lighter the line is, the further you can cast.

All my line on my reels are braid! I use no more mono for that!!
Now as for my leaders I use Seagur Floro. This is for every type fishng I do, including Fluke.
Now that said I and a few friends have figured out something when bass fishing at night!!
With Floro at night I get less hits!! And what we have come up with is that if I use green berkly big game as a leader at night I can double or triple the hits I get with floro?? But this is only at night!
So i think were floro is invisable duriong the day it is not at night?
I really don't care as long as it works

50 lb Ande pink for leader.

best combination for bottom fishing is 50 LB Cortalnd spectron running line and 50 LB ande pink leaders.


For plugging 35 LB Spectron and 30 LB Ande Pink leader or 40 LB Ande gren leader. Sov ethe money you would spend on Flouro leaders by buying Ande and put the xtra money towards spectron instead of mono running line.

SPINNING or CONVENCH BOTTOM FISHING:

I prefer to use a barrel swivel for these applications rather than an albright-type knot. Breakoffs are an issue.

Best-In-Class Fluoro My favorite is Orvis Mirage.

Next-best Fluoro Seaguar, sold everwhere. I don't feel this is as abrasion-resistant as Orvis Mirage.

Best-In-Class plain-old mono leader Triplefish.

Pretty-good mono leader Ande Pink.

My friends that Tuna fish keep the reels covered so the floro (wich I am told is light sensitive) won't become visible from exposure to the sun .. Worth checking out ...these guys aren't rookies ,, save your money .. I go with Saltheart... My conventional with 30# mono running and 50 # leader ande pink caught tons of fish on that .. literally... Braid go the other way.. 65# Wiplash or something similar ..go 40 # or even 30# leader.. so if u hang up u can break off the bottom without killing yourself .. another thing .. I only like the ande pink on Conventional,,,too stiff for spinning .. It seems the Pink holds up the best in the rocks wich I fish 95% of the time .. only reason for color..

Notaro! Watch out for duolocks. I had a couple of them open when casting 2 3/8 oz poppers. the first time I saw it I thought that I had forgotten to snap it, but it happened again. I replaced it with a new one and next cast it was open again. I threw away about 50 of them and switched to coastlocks. They are harder to use but have not failed me yet. I buy them as snap swivels and cut off the swivels,can't seem to find them alone.Casting conventional you don't need swivels. I use 30 b fireline and 40 or 50 lb Ande mono for leaders. It's cheap enough to change the shocker every trip if I want to.

BTW, Tagger, whiplash sucks. I used it once it and it snapped off easily. I personally stick to the fireline.

Joseph, yes, of course, but on a spinning outfit I really think you are better off with braid (on that particular setup Berkley Fireline is the best way to go).

Seaguar Fluoro for leader material is the best I've found and worth every penny. The worst was the triple fish flouro. The 50lb. I got last spring wouldn't hold a knot and consistently broke at 30lb. of pull. I now call it "triple trash".
