Removing reel seat
I set up a blank with a spin reel seat, I changed my mind and want to make it conv. Whats the easiest way to get the seat off without damaging the blank? It's on with Rod Bond.

What I've done in the past is cut it away with a hacksaw. I start cutting about 45 degrrees to the reel seat and "spiral around" the seat from end to end. Just keep an eye on your depth of cut. I use 2 ton epoxy and masking tape bushings...not rodbond.

macojoe, you're right about too much heat, i should have mentioned that. too much will cause a blank to go "soft". have'nt tried opening up with my dremel first, but will.

I use a dremel with a cut off wheel down both sode of the seat. Then a screwdriver in the cut slot and twist and the halfs will split and come off. Cutting one slot its still difficult to get the seat off unless there are no guides yet.

HTe easiest way I found, for this specific situation is - to build the rod the right way the first time, and not flip flop what you want to use the rod for. Or just buy another blank.
lol.

I found the same Billy. I tried everything short of cutting the blank and drilling the seat. It won't come off!!

How many rodbuilders does it take to remove a reel seat? answer: 10...bring it to the BBQ and we'll figure out a way!! I'll belt sand it into dust in a heartbeat.

Save the blank?...yes. Save the reel seat?..only if you want to keep it a spinning rod. I'm pretty good with my belt sander and will show you this technique on one of my rods first if interested.RT
