first plug, first cast, fish

and now the rest of the story.
I used to flyfish obsessively and when I was looking at my 4th saltwater flyrod, a two hander so I could cast 100 feet instead of 80, I said to myself why dont I buy a spinning rod. So I did and now I have a new obsession. Then I decided I want some wooden plugs and bought a couple, well of course I wanted more, so I said well i'll try making some. I've made some stubby needles like in the latest issue of OTW, and some 6" needles, and some 8" needles. This past weekend was the first chance I had to try them out in the salt, and first cast, fish on and it was a decent size slot fish. Needless to say that was at 11:30pm and it was the last fish I saw until the next am. But it was fun to catch a fish on a plug I made and I'm sure I have many more to go.

I do have a question. My frst plugs were sprayed from a can and smell really chemical. Does that make a difference or not? Does coating them with a clearcoat cover the outgassing? or can you add flavor to the paint, just kidding.

Sweet! I didn't get mine on the first cast, but I did catch a few nice shorts the first serious attempt at fishing my first plugs this summer. A few people I gave some to caught bass pretty quickly as well. Must be doing something right...

Most guys clear coat with epoxy or some other hard waterproof finish. Search through the old threads and you can probably find detailed information.
