Yo-Zuri Plug - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

I seen a new plug from yo-zuri that looks pretty good. Its a squid plug. It has a lip and i guess it dives a couple of feet and is supposed to imitate a squid. It costs 16 bucks. I was wondering if anyone has used it?????????????

I have the pink one in my bag and it works very well. Well worth the money! Also very well made. It casts soso but if the wind is at your back or you don't need distance it is fine. I used it a lot last season. This year I found something a little bit sweeter. I like squid based lures, and find just about any fish, big and small feel the same way. Yo Zuri also makes a different rubba squid that is so realistic you can not tell the difference from the real thing in the water. I rig mine with an egg sinker and SS treble with some fluorcarbon leader material and it casts better then the pink lure and glides sub surface and looks so real it is amazing. The pink lure waddles a little like a minnow based lure, squid don't do that. But it seems to work nonetheless. The key to all squid lures are to work them very very sloooooooooooow with a twitch now and then. This rubba thing is neutrally buoyant in the water with the egg and it hangs.....just like a real squid. I have never seen it sold in a local shop but I ordered it from some I-net tackle shop that discovered them on a trip to japan and brought some back to this country. Maybe you have seen them. They come in 12" and 7" and 4". I have seen similar ones for frolling spreaders for tuna offshore but they did not look nearly as real as these and were way too big for bass. Below is the 7 3/4' one I have in my bag. (they are about 7 bucks (unriged) for the 7 3/4" model and I think about 10 bucks for the 12" model.. I have a few of each.
They seem to work well but I have only tried them a few times so far.

And I also like Mr. Tatoo's version...I'll take 1/2 doz in varied sizes and colors please....

Nice plug Tatoo. And I like the rubber squid idea.

About the retrieve, when I fish squid flies at night I use a much quicker retrieve. I use a quick strip- long pause-quick strip retrieve to simulate (I hope anyway) the darting action of a squid trying to escape a predator. Even on the darkest nights bass go for it.

I think I will buy 1 just to try it out. They have 2 models one is a surface squirt and the other is called a hydro squirt. Which one should I get.

BTW Tattoo that plug looks great inovation is the key to success!!

Sandman I have seen similar squids look like that one in your pic. But guys buy the bodies and put them on umbrella rigs is that one in the pic an actual production lure from yo-zuri? If so where can I get them on the net. I didn't see them on the yo-zuri website.

Anthony, Not everything Yo-Zuri makes is exported to the US. The pic I showed was the one in my box. The catalog pic is actually better (see below.

Yes these were intended for trolling tuna spreadar bars and I have seen similar ones too, but not nearly as real looking as these. I just figured I rig one for casting and give it a shot. Not a lot of science here, a simple egg sinker slides inside the squid and rigged with a treble. There is enough weight to cast it far enough. (it cast better then a live eel) Frankly I think it looks more like the real thing then any squid lure I have ever seen. It the water they perfect. I was thinking of stuffing the belly with a sponge loaded with scent to add further appeal.

I try a lot of odd ball schemes...I made a castable daisy-chain/ umbrella type rig of small fins minows. Looks like a small school of sand eels or spearing. It was messy to cast but it worked...Small blue fish attacked it like mad this summer. I was thinking of doing the same thing with 4-6" slugos for bass. Maybe next season....

Those look like Yozuri squids. I've seen them in the Melton offshore catalog and I think the Cabelas saltwater acatlog, as well as a few other places.
