My choice would be none of the above.
I'd toss jigs in the canal all season.

Eel
Live eels does not cover live bait and live bait is what the biggest of fish have been caught on this year,.........the poll is extremely flawed.

While I have to admit a live eel from the surf is probably the most productive method to get a large bass...That said, I would rather catch it on a quality plug. Some I know would like to do it on a jig (bucktail). Either way, it takes more skill as a surfcaster to fool and land a big bass with an artificial then it does with live bait. Live bait is considered "cheating" many purists, just as fishing from a boat is. If you want to be recognized as a top surfcaster...its not just about big fish beached, it is how you do it. If you like to see your name in the paper for a big fish, fish live bait. I tend to fish about 65% plugs 20% eels, 10% rubber 5% jigs. I don't espose this as the "right" way...its just what I do.

I would prefer eels but I bet more monster fish have fallen to chunk bait than all the other methods put together. Oh , BTW , not all chunkers are using sandspikes. lots of guys actively frifting chunks , just like working eels or lures. Many also chum a shore spot then drift the chunks. hard work doing it that way. I love to set up for jigging at the canal down current from the guys who are chumming and drifting chunks.

I do not think the Poll is flawed, it is what it is. I did just re-read the poll and the first post by #^^^^^^& and I still can not see where it limits the poll to surfcasting...
Withiout that limitation...same answer...live bunker from a boat is one's best shot at a Trophy...
I Surf fish more than boat fish and agree that there is somethning special about catching from the sand/rocks/grass/water/mud etc. I might have to go with live herring as the best technique for catching a trophy from terra firma...
Before it gets said...of course live bait is going to catch better and of course it takes less skill to accomplish...this is all part of my answer to the question as posed. Do not forget, eels are also live bait and that is why my answer to the poll as written would be eels, followed by chunk bait...and I absolutely hate fishing cut bait from the surf....
