I got a report that there were some pogies off the east side of Block Island today. There are a lot of them in the upper bay and there are big bass on them . I know some boatniks that are doing well up there ....but the water is getting hot there. Too hot for bassies to hang out in. Oh yes ,too hot and they will be moving back down the bay to your favorite secret spot soon.

There won't be for too much longer.....I'm watching two pogie boats seine them up right now behind my place in Riverside.

It's really too bad. I wonder what the economic impact has been from all the boats chsing the stripers that have been chasing the pogies. I would imagine it would outweigh whatever the boat owners make....

Last month I made a joking comment about the pogie boat poaching all the stripers in Narragansett bay, right (unknown to me) in front of a guy who works for Arc Bait

I thought it was pretty ironic, he didn't think it was so funny

A$ alway$ there i$ more to it than meet$ the eye. How many people come to Rhody for lob$ter$ in the re$urant$ charging maximum price and paying tiny wage$ in the "new $ervice economy"...... Where does the lob$ter bait come from other than the pogie boat$?

I would $ay it is more about $uppoting the life$tyle of not even the rich, but the ultra cla$$ than what the lowly bass fisherman wants or the needs of the environment....

I think the pogi fishing pressure has been so great for so long that in order to achieve balance you need to shut it down for 50 years. It is time the pendulum swings the other way.

Glad you see them...no sight of the here (yet) but my eyes are peeled!

You're not kidding about the pogies in buzzards bay.

Day before yesterday, my fishing partner had one on his fly line, until......

they made it to MV Yesterday was the first time I saw them in probably 10+ years. Not a huge school but it was fun to see them flippin on the surface. If they stick around till the fall...it could get fun, real fun.

Has anyone seen bass mixed in with those menhaden when the net is pulled? Or do bass get out of the way?

pogies

These are "red tide" pogies. Remeber years ago when Boston Harbor was dirty? We haven't had a big red tide since those days....
