Yup, and I think there's two main reasons--games on every night on cable, and interleague play.

Used to be, if you lived in an AL market like New England, the only time you got to see the NL was on the Saturday NBC Game of the Week, and even then, what you saw primarily was the Dodgers, or the Mets after they got good for awhile in 1969. So, the All Star Game was a chance to see all of the great NL stars--Mays, Clemente, Aaron, Seaver, Marichal, Gibby, Koufax et al.

Nowadays, you can see them alll season long on TBS, the Chicago superstation, ESPN, the Deuce, and several other cable sports or satellite networks. The novelty of the All Star Game wore out. Interleague play just made it even less of a novelty.

I think you also have to add to the list of declining interest in the game the tendency for so many players to switch teams every couple of years. It takes away from the sense of rivalry between the leagues. The absolute low though had to be in 2002 when they called the game a tie in extra innings. At least now they play for World Series home field.
I'll watch part of it tonight anyway.

It was ok ,but I did not care for the nationalty theam.
I would have liked to see the 8 or 10 best homerun hitters, not because some guy is from Timbukto

I wasn't gonna go there, but you are correct on this.
Did you see when Abreu's bat started to "peel".......I have played baseball for over 30 years (3 of which were professionally), and I have never seen a bat "flake" and "peel" the way his bat was peeling.

Here's one for you: how come these guys hit mammoth shots during the home run contest when the ball is thrown at about 70 - 75 mph AT MOST, but when they connect with a 90+ mph fastball in a game it doesn't travel as far as these HR hitting contest shots....?? Answer: they use juiced balls and corked bats in these contest in order to generate more bat speed and therefore ball distance to put on a show.......Bud Selig has been the #1 perpitrator of turning baseball into WWF.

Hey...Jerry Remy just said (Thursday nights telecast vs. Yankees) that he spoke to Dale Sveum about the Homereun hitting contest in Detroit, and Sveum even said the balls were lighter and smaller then regular baseballs.

Sveum would know....he pitched to Ortiz in the contest.

Slow down Killer....you were the one who started this thread by saying how in awe you were of Bobby Abreu's mammoth homeruns in the contest.....just because you didn't realize the balls were juiced is no reason to get defensive now.

Not being defensive ar all!!!

I started this tread by saying "who the heck is this guy Bobby Abreu"
I have never heard of him before this week (maybe because he plays for Philly)
I also found out since then , that he is a lead off hitter!

as for not realizing the ball was juiced, it is every year!!!
and in years past you had Sosa, Mark McGwire, Griffy jr.,Giambi,Brady Anserson, Shefield, ect .... all juiced up on steriods
and none of them hit 24 in 1 round!

I watched the show as a fan and enjoyed it and could have cared less if the ball was juiced, it was just fun to watch!!!
It's just like the argument about women with real or breast implants!
Who cares if implants are fake !!!
Show me a normal (hederosexual ) guy who doesn't like looking at them!!!

Homerun,
comments from last night's game supported your "juiced ball" comment, for the homerun contest. Remy was saying the sox 3rd base coach Dale Swayne said the balls seemed smaller and harder.

That's just the credibility the game needs.
Why not break out the aluminum bats?

Okay RR.....I was interpreting your original post as you were AMAZED by the power of these guys.....perhaps not.

As for Chris Berman, I couldn't agree with you more. Am I the only guy in America who can't stand his act anymore? This nonsence of inserting some cute adjective into every players last name is a). Boring, b). Childish c). All of the above. Just say the guys name for goodness sake.
