Van Staal surf bags

They're back...

Both single row and double row.

Same as the Habs Pencil Poppers, they're not on the web yet so just give the shop a call or stop on by if you have questions or want to get a better look at them.

$109 and $139. Tons of tin and bucktail slots in both bags and plenty of room around the tubes for leader wallets and plastics.

BW bags are junk- plug hooks get stuck under the tube ends, the top flap can come undone in the surf and dump your plugs in the wash...

the aquaskins bags & VS bags are worth it..

a plug bag isnt like an eel bucket

I baught my bags from the surfcaster years ago and they are still like new. The bw bags are not that bad, but when you need to carry 100 plugs to fish a night I guess nothing will hold up

Heh, I can only guess what I missed as I was out fishing...

The edit function should removed from the board, I love seeing what people say before they think first.

Almost sounds like I was accused of having over priced product? I carry almost every plug bag made in all price ranges except the Surfcaster bags since I can't get them. BW to VS to 'skinz and others in between. Surfcaster bags aren't exactly cheap either, last time I checked. $130 for an overweight surf bag?

The highlight of both the VS and the 'skinz bag is definitely the velcro, I happily pay a premium just for that. I've never lost a plug to the flap popping open on either my VS bag or my 'skinz bag, but I've seen plenty of surfcasters dump hundreds of $$ over the years into the surf thanks to lesser bags. The velcro on these bags also never seems to age and lose it's ability to grip over time either. Just this evening I was stuck in a toilet bowl in my wetsuit, clutching on to a few pices of kelp while getting bashed by waves and trying not to get sucked out to sea. When I eventually dragged myself out all my plugs were safe and sound in my Aquaskinz single row.

The BW bag is what it is, a low priced bag. People love them as long as they aren't too extreme in their surfcasting. It gets the job done as long as you don't ask too much of it.

Surf bags, overall, seem to be a "you get what you pay for" sort of deal.

It's pretty close; the material is slightly different and there are bucktail pouches both in front of and behind the tubes. You'll never be lacking when it comes to tin or bucktail storage. The tubes might be slightly taller.

There is also more black nylon webbing on both the bottom and the back of the bag. There will be more testing in the coming weeks; most of the bags that came in are already sold to people who pre-ordered them LONG ago, and a couple were nabbed by guys in the shop who will definitely give them a good work out. Time will tell of course, but they look good to me.

What I said was I think those VS AND Surcaster bags are way overpriced, you as a retailer have to sell to make a profit and I understand that completley, its not a personall attack, IMO its crazy to spend $150 bucks for velcro, home depot sells the extreme velcro (and trust me this stuff is extreme) for $5.99, you can sew it on any bag you want!! Velcro is velcro its one company and the extreme is the best they make. When I baught my surfcaster bag it was 60 bucks but has went up since then, yes they are a bit heavy, I dont carry 10 plugs with me anyway so I mostly use the belt bag.

I have switched now from shoulder bags to the "fish pond" fanny pack and it doubles as a wading belt, there is more than enough room in it for all the plugs you need and everything else, plus I hate a bag over my shoulder while I am casting. That fanny pack was $85 at fin and feather. Anyway I stand by what I said , there to expensive.........

I bout the B&W bag cause I like the tubes.the velcro was givin me WWII flashbacks so I took the toobs out an cut em on the band saw an put em in my Canyon bag.I always wanted a VS bag but they where hard to come by they where supposedly made from hi tech nylon that would take a beatin.I used to rapp a bungee around the canyon when i got extreme.I have seen bags empty out wit plugs u cannot replace gone forever.then I saw the aquaskin bag an was all over it.I like it. I need a smaller bag i think the single row VS Bag is for me.
Stuff one wit hab pencils an mail it to NJ please.

I'll try and take some pics; last time we tried to photograph a plug bag it was tough to get good shots which actually show the build quality. The bags have a date with someone with more photography skills in the next few days though.

Exactly. That's why I like them. They fit MY needs.

I epoxied on a couple extra strips of extreme velcro. The flap coming open is no longer an issue. As far as the hooks getting hung up on the bottom of the tubes I've simply never encountered that problem with my bags.

For the price the BW bags are just fine.

If I spent my time in the surf up to my armpits I'd own a VS or Skinz bag.But since I don't do that type of fishing very often there's no point in owning one.I'd rather take that cash and put it towards plugs, leaders etc.

I'm curious as to why these threads always turn into "these are junk, those are junk" arguments?Pete's just letting folks who are interested know that he has them in stock.

No I dont wear one around town so get that picture out of your head

I have a wading belt with the small surcaster bag on it, all I carry is leader material, hooks and a file, I hardly notice its there and can bounce around the rocks all night with ease.

Just a little history. Back before all this new surfbag stuff came about we would go to the Army/Navy store and buy surplus gas mask bags. Had my wife sew velco on both sides of the flap and used empty shampoo bottles with the top cut off and holes drilled in the buttom. Crude but effective and cheap. Total cost with the velcro was about 5 bucks. I had my last one stolen when I left it hooked to my bumper at Fresh Pond Rock about 10 years ago. I don't think you can get the old canvas bags anymore but they were great. I had 5 or 6 set up for different conditions/places/times of the year.

No boat, back in the suds.

You still can get surplus bags, mine is some kind of synthetic material has belt loops and good velcro fasteners. Put drainage grommets in the bottom and made a 8 tube insert with a bottom out of vac tube and plexi. Or I stuff a bag of ice on the bottom and put a plastic bag of eels on top of it. Total cost maybe $20 at most if you had to buy everthing and were'nt good at scrounging.

This is a new twist - a Van Staal Bag Bashing thread...

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

Piemma, prior to my bw bag I had gone the same route. The army navy place across from the breakfast place in gansett carries them. and The army navy surplus place on thayer carries them as well. That bag saw a TON of use. Of all the things the ex could keep that was it, it stunk cuz it was full too.. I cant wait to see the shots of these Vs bags, I just hope the quality is there.

Domination takes full concentration..

I think your price is upside down. You got a single row for $139 and double for $109.

Having said that ,they look great.Another thing I have to have
