Uffah a gut shot can happen and its still a dead deer in the freezer that was not waisted. I know lots of lung shots so they say that never get found so if a gut shot is what it takes then maybe you should try it. I have only lost 1 deer in 15 years of bow hunting and know it was a good hit but lost him do to my own stupidity at the time as I did not leave it alone long enough and pushed him to soon and lost him to a swamp. I am not going to say all my shots have been heart or lung shots because sh#t does happen. How ever I do not give up on a deer that I know was hit be it mine or a freinds and have found many that others had given up on. Find me a hunter that has never had a bad hit and I will show you some one that has never shot. A gut shot deer will ALWAYS die they do not make it no matter how much you tell your self it will. The thing is to let them be and you WILL find them the next morning or later in the day if hit in the am. I know of two gut shot deer that did not go 100 yards this past week that six point being one of them. It is some times more important what you do after the shot then the shot its self. I am not saying its ok to make a off target shot but it does happen and it is then more important what you see and do after the hit. This is were most get in trouble and loose their deer.

Great deer GB. Gut shots account for a lot of deer harvested. I agree with you that you should give them AMPLE time after the shot. The worst thing to do is chase right after them even though you are excited about your success in hitting your target.

Its important people know that gut shot are NOT what us sportsman strive for, yes it happens and with experience you'll recover more deer. Give the animal its dignity and hit it in the vitals, shot placement is everything.

The scares behind the bucks shoulder are common they are often caused from the deers own rack when feeding. If you strech his neck they might line up, usualy found in older deer. If not you need to spend more time in the area for Bull Winkle(like habs would say)

Don't know why everybody is so testy!! I know gut shots are not impossible, even to good hunters. All I ment was that's what happens when a gut shot happens, it seems you have to track that animal for miles sometimes.I was not saying that it was a bad shot!!

Last winter I gut-shot a deer with my ML. It took us almost three hours to recover it. We waited twice over a half hour to let it sit and pool up. I have never seen so much blood tracking was insane but easy. the shot I took was not the best angle but no shot gets no deer. The decision to shoot lies with the hunter if you don't get the perfect shot (like TV!) its your responsabilty to recover a wounded animal.
