Just wondering if anyone has experience with the new Evenrude ETECs.

I would say you pretty much can't go wrong with any of the current generation of direct injection 2 stroke (ETEC, HPDI, Optimax) or 4 stroke engines.

I have a Yamaha 150 HPDI that has been flawless but I would just as soon purchase one of the other engine brands too.

Everyone likes their own brand, so do your research...

BUT, I know a guy who sells ETECs and has one.
One word.........

AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blows away any 4 stroke in power and effeciency.
Very quiet too.
Even blows away competitors comparable engines.

But your gonna mortage the house for it !!!!!!!!

The Ave Maria got a brand new 225 ETEC before last season started and it is AWESOME !!!
Stay away from the larger Yamaha hpdi 2 strokes (250 & 300)
Just go on the hull truth and read about all the power heads blowing up!!!

LETS GO BRANDON

I think they fixed the power head problem on the big HPDIs. I have a friend who runs a guide service with a 300HPDI, and he got through the first season without a hickup. Be careful if you buy one used though. Yamaha did an update, but did not do a recall.

the e-techs are awesome. a friend of mine has one, and though there were no performance issues, the lower unit did start to pit a little. the suzukis are also nice. another friend's 21 steiger chesapeake tops out at 35 mph with a 115 suzuki 4 stroke. it has over 400 hours on it, and runs like a top. i have heard of some problems with the larger yammi hpdi's and 4 strokes s#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g in salt spray and corroding on the inside, though this was 2 or 3 seasons ago and yamaha was working on the problem.

fishing is not a love, but an obsession

I hear that I was quoted $2500 more for an ETEC and they were going to be reusing controls gauges etc, and that $2500 difference was before sales tax on the ETEC

I own a e-tec 200 replaced a 95 Johnson 200 ocean runner.I take five trips on 70 gallons of gas instead of three.I use almost half the 2 stroke oil [XD-100 syn.] I run at 3800 rpms instead of 4200.No 2stroke smell So quite I try to start it when it's allready runing. So much get up and go I almost lose people off the transom.E-tec is 220lbs lighter than the 4strokes has more get up and go no oil changes no timeing belts to worry about no valves that need to be adjusted its all most maintenance free 2 is greater than 4 in this case plus got A 7 year warrenty

17K when your all done for old technology (etec)? Out of the big four manufacturers Yamaha, Merc, Suzuki, Evinrude is the only one calling it the future? Thats a lot of money for something many already don't want on their transom. Just thinking resale. All of the injected two strokes run great and deliver better power than the 4's no doubt. I own three HPDI 200's with a cumulative of 1200 hours of absolutely flawless running time but on resale everybody wants 4's. I am going to get beat up here but just thought I'd my $.02.

Not sure I understand your point. Are you considering the ETEC to be old technology? Hardly, it represents the 3rd generation of Direct Fuel Injected 2-stroke engines.

1st generation (1997-2001): Mercury OptiMax, OMC FICHT

2nd Generation (2002-2004): Mercury Digital OptiMax, Bombardier FICHT RAM, Yamaha HPDI, Nissan/Tohatsu TLDI

3rd Generation (2005+): Bombardier ETEC

Or are you saying that all 2-stroke engines are old technology? I also run a HPDI engine and it has been flawless. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another DFI 2-stroke engine in the future.

Yamaha nice, going on season three. In saying that, it seems most other brands have come along way. If you asked this question a couple of years ago my answer would have been different.
If I had to make a decision now, I'ld go 4-stroke.
