Fishing with Bucktails

Has anyone read "Fishing with Bucktails" by Muller. I'm wondering if its worth trying to track down a copy. Bucktails are a lure I've never had much confidence in and therefore don't use much in the surf but I know I'm missing out on something by not using 'em. Thanks for any input.

While I never cared for mullers stuff, a much better book is Tim Colemans "To catch a bass" In there he details his "dropback" method. This book has a treasury of bass catching stuff in it and I think you can find it on ebay. Having said that, next to eels, I love fishing 3 and 4 ounce smilin bill bucktails with rind or a big curltail in the breachways.They are tough to get the hang of but, they produce awesome bass.Its kind of lost its popularity with all the "wood is good" talk and plugging in general seems to be the fad of the last couple years. Deep jigging outflows is one of the deadliest methods there is to catch smokin bass! I used to do this alot at Quanny in the early 90s with great success and many a night watched my friend Damon pull out some real creakers on jigs, we always used a black jig with purple hair and a black 8 inch curltail, I cant say enough how good it was. Most guys hate losing jigs and fishing something that heavy so they shy away and think the best bass are out in the rip itself well, many huge bass slinky there way along the bottom and hold tight right on the bottom in the chanells. A buctail is one of the best ways to catch bass. Read billy the greeks book...........Anyway its worth your while to learn.....Every surfcaster that fishes for stripers should have a knowledge of how to fish bucktails, its a staple for the sport. In the fall at Montauk, 90% of the bass big or small are caught on white upperman 2oz jigs. Beach fishing a bucktail and deep jigging a bucktail are two different things, one takes much more skill than the other...Its an artform all on its own. Tim has taken many a 40lb fish from gallilie on 3oz smilin bills, The hits are awesome!

Muller's stuff is ok if its dink bass you want, he speclializes in school bass fishing.

bucktails of all sizes will definitely be in my bag this season. I figure RI has similar structure to Montauk and those guys down there kill big bass on the them. i'm gonna try "swimming" bucktails in the rocks more this year rather than the traditional jigging motion.

"Fishing with bucktails" is a good book and worth purchasing. I think a better book for understanding bucktail techniques is Al Reinfelders "Baittail Fishing", even though its specific to the use of Alou eels, its still the best Ive read on the subject. Tim Colemans article in drop back bucktailing is good, but its only a few pages long.
