Contractor question

When dealing with structure set-back dimensions,
is it the side of the building that is measured?
In my town the set-back for a garage is 5' from the property lines.
Just wondering if I should take into account the 1' eave overhang. That would make it 4' from this closest point if I lay-out for 5' to the side of the structure.
Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure the setback is for the foundation,
though in some towns , the roof height comes into play

some town's it's the foundation,,some to the wood itself....my zoning call's for a 35' setback from the p. line and 40' from the road.....garden house you can put 10' from the line if it's under 100 sq. feet...talk about getting squeezed...your lucky.....call your town hall for rules and reg's or better yet...get them in writing.

BOAT fish do count.
