I've been a "lurker" for a few years now. When I signed up thought it would be good and it is, but I was turned off by all the b***ng about spot burning and "temporary guest workers" fishing in peoples spot. So i've never posted. This is my first and I would thank you all for the tips and advice that I gotten from "lurking".

The guests are probably S-B members in stealth mode

ah, flushed you out!!

Welcome! but I think all the tips and advice (and spots?) should at least be worth the "expense" of registering. Allowing lurkers to lurk forever seems to make this appear "cheap", it is really much better then that. I am not saying there should be a fee but to see 2 or 3X as many lurkers on then members seems wrong too. In time I think members might post less because it is all lurkers on board and those tips and advice will not be there.

I'm starting to think there are a few like me here.
Registered for a few years but just don't post very often for whatever reason. I can't stay logged on for more than 10 or 15 miinutes(bad modem) at home and I don't have the time in work to do anything but read. And I am addicted I have to keep coming back. Not here for spots; just tips and how-tos. (Originally)

Some of the "guests" are Yahoo search bots and they seem to be investigating every stinkin nook and cranny on this site. I swear every day they go thru 10000 posts than start back at the beginning the nexy day

Many are people poking around and looking through the site...

What's a search bot, and what is their function? Who is behind their search/program? Is this happening on other sites? Can they do damage to the site? Just wondering.....

Search "bots" go through and entire site (where allowed) and "index" the site. Essentially they dredge the data and bring it back to the server at the search engine company. So, theoretically, if you typed "//^%(@ " into a search engine you would likely have a page from here written by Clammer, that is of course of the search engines knew Clammerese

I'm much to opinionated to lurk, but everyone needs an audience.Keep lurking, sooner or later we'll find you!

Make it idiot proof, and someone will make a better idiot.

Well, by shutting down lurkers after some period of time you force them to join or leave. And I think most would join, this site is kind of addicting and it does not cost you anything. It would force you to become one of "us" and increase our numbers and keep out the dunnage only looking to pick up drifting tips and never contributing anything. I would also think it could shut out many of the bots that visit every day. I don't like knowing there are lots of peeping toms reading or "monitoring" but not contributing to the site day in and out. What good is that? None of this is up to me anyway. I am just a sb.com cult member like some of you. And it doesn't really bother me....I am just more vocal this time of year for some reason. Must be the lack of herring this year.

Like many of you said, we all were a lurker for some period of time...but what is reasonable? How hard is it to register? What is the problem there? I just as soon not have every person in the world be able to read my posts.

I am tired of hearing...Oh I don't go to those kinds of web sites...yet they seem to know all about them...hmmmm. (You know they are full of it)

Perhaps there should be a private "lounge", "saloon" or "cockpit" where lurkers can not go? We could all gravitate to there to divulge our hot fishing secrets out of the prying eyes of the skulking lurkers.

Sandman:

I know the lurking feeling is creepy but I signed on but didn`t post much for quite awhile which many can still do. Be a member and just read for all their visits.

How about that other site that has a special fee driven membership where you are privy to current reports. I don`t think S-B wants to go there.
There is always PMs to let your compadres know if you want to.

Its a tough one to define. Kind of like illegal immigration.

Good health and family

I found this board by doing a search for striped bass....not looking for a message board... I would pop on here and there forgetting about it for months.....
for me the whole concept of the message board was too weird........Ive never been one to "belong" to any type of group or club......so I lurked until I felt comfortable....I cant believe all the obsessed fishing nuts like me Ive met from this place .....truly amazing
