I just did the same thing with my new handheld gps yesterday.
I can't help you with coordiantes, but make sure you are using the correct coodinate system.
I created my positions based on degrees/min/seconds
When I entered them, I found out my gps defaulted to
degrees/min/MM. (I don't know what MM is, but is based on a scale of 10 and this scale is very useful on small scale charts)
I think this board is great, but I wouldn't trust plugging in coordinates for safety sake.
I highly recommend getting a chart of the areas you are interested in, and if you don't know how to plot a fix or apply fixed positions on a chart, take a CG auxillary course, or see your local harbor master for some assistance.
Once you know how to accurately plot your own position, you are only limited by the size of your boat and how much you can spend on fuel.
