A friend of mine was wiped off a rock Saturday night in Newport after the wind turned NW and the seas started to build.

He managed to get back to shore and is OK, but a VS250 and a surf rod were claimed by what many consider (and recent history would indicate) the most dangerous spot in Newport.

AT least these guys were prepared. nice to see, glad they're fine.

That radio saved their lives. These guys sounded incredibly prepared.

yes. I got smart too this year and now carry one of the mini Vertex IP54 rated portables with me on my pfd. Figure anything could help.

yes. Getting CG/someone to hear a call would probably increase your chances 80-90%. Range on a 5 watt handheld at 1' ground height and no antenna gain is pretty limited on ground, but should be hopefully enough for the areas I fish like b bay, vineyard sound etc but not much probably out beyond even over open water. You could be in a trough of a wave and not be able to talk to anyone because you have a wall of water around you. I hope to not ever find out and try to plan to prevent stuff from happening in the first place. Every year it seems there is a statistic. Some from the fishing boards...would not like to have it be someone here.

Sospenders/fanny pack/radio/epirb/whatever the cost is nothing when it's your life.
