He used to be, he's at the end of the road in his career. Still a good veteran guy for the sox to pick up. Javy was awesome during his Atlanta days

Being a Mets fan, I saw more of Javy than I would have liked over the years. He was a key cog in the Braves winning all those NL East titles. He's getting up there, but he's still a good guy to have handy. Reminds me of when the Sox picked up Elston Howard for a song and he helped make the Impossible Dream happen in 1967.

Mirabelli goes down and takes Wakefield with him. Big loss. Lopez, tho, can't hurt. We could use another very good catcher. I hope he can catch a knuckle ball.

How about Jose Tartabull? Key game against the White Sox (this was before divisions and playoffs, you either won the pennant or went home in September), who were also in the race, Ken Berry tags up on a fly ball to shallow left. Tartabull, who had a weaker arm than Johnny Damon, made the throw of his life and Howard blocked the plate like the old pro he was. Berry beat the throw but couldn't get to the plate. Tying run cut down, Sox win.
Early season game vs the Yankees, rookie pitcher Billy Rohr takes a no hitter into the bottom of the ninth at the Stadium. Two out, Elston Howard is sent up as a pinch-hitter, and lines a single to break up the no-no. By season's end, he's catching Rohr.
I'm only 52.
