Supermarket Grump XXVI
Been noting a general trend among the younger working class mostly at the supermarkets but also other retail locals! I get in line to check out and I get no "Hello how are you" or "Did you find everything you need?" or even after I say "Hi, how are you?"...not even a reply?!?! Then with the "pleasantries out of the way the cashier and the bagger do nothing but small talk about how "its only 3 minutes until their break" or how they hate this person or that person or how their weekend was!!!!! These businesses better get on top of their employees in respect to customer service and such....I feel as though I am putting these jerks out just getting my groceries!!! I am starting to think the self check-outs are the way to go and put these ungrateful, lazy bastards out of work......then they will have something to complain about!!!!!
OK....carry on!

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.
1984 was a warning, not a guidebook!
It's time more people spoke up with the truth. Every time we let a leftist lie go uncorrected, the commies get stronger.

Larry.. I don't know about your town, but in my town, at the supermarkets, the clerks do not speak english, they are from the former Soviet Union for the most part, part time non union help, they cannot communicate, only run the machines.. baggers??? forgetaboutit.. when I go, I use the check youself out deal... if it screwss up, the english speaking manager comes out to deal with it, and I can bag it mysel, rather, as opposed to having one item in each bag.. and the eggs broken... .. I like Paper Bags too, damnit.. try to convince a bagger to put them in paper.. the ones that will, do it, then put the whole thing in a plastic bag .. WTF is up with that?

How about when they return your change (bills, coins) with the receipt at the same time and don't count it in front of you.
Ignorance, short changing on purpose, poor training or they assume that you trust them.

Thats my biggest pet peeve
Nothing like waiting in Walmarts "express" line for 15 mins... only to have the knob in front of you write a check for $8.00
Actually - Walmart in general is a giant zit on the arse of the retail world.

Its the economy stupid :)
When the economy gets better, there are fewer people looking for work.
That means that the employers cannt pick and choose the best. they need to take what they can get.
from 2000-2003 I swa a lot of well educated, clear speaking, kind, cheerful, helpful (almost boyscout material) people working in a lot of %$%$%$%$ service jobs.
Now, as the economy turns, the smart ones have gotten back into higher paying work. the cruft is left to continue in the crap jobs and they employers cannot find enough replacement help to cut them loose.
It makes me feel better when the service at BestPray/Compblew$A goes in the crapper. that means my job is more secure.

Count change-surely you jest
REDSOCKSTICKET thats why the register tells them how much change to give you because they cant count it.
I will say this in Roche brothers in Bridgewater, while they dont count change they surely exchange pleasantries with you. Company policy, same in Wholefoods..........

Doesn't matter to me if the cashier and or bagger don't speak to me as long as they are efficient in their work, but the second anything I am purchasing is abused I will speak up. If it's the bagger, say loud enough for the people nearby and hopefully a manager to hear, something to the effect that I plan on eating it in one piece and to "step away from my food, I will bag it myself." Not too long ago, my head almost blew off like Milton the Monster when they needed a price check for ice cream I had bought. The kid going to check walks like there's no urgency in his mission, AND, is tossing the half gallon up in the air and catching itas he goes. I said to the cashier, "Oh that's not good, that's not good at all." Well he stands there frozen like a deer in the headlights. The other kid returns, mumbles the price and throws the ice cream into a bag like he's doing a fall away jumpshot. My eyes rolled back in my head for a second, but I composed and said, "Look grociery bag, here's what you're going to do. You're going to hustle your butt back to the ice cream section and find me this exact brand that's not dented, sticky or leaking and you're going to come back and hand it to me or we'll be chatting to your manager about why you feel the need to abuse other people's food. Don't play catch with it, don't hurt it, just get it and come back quickly, because the rest of the people on this line want to see what a conscientious and gentle bagger you are. The kid has actually been pretty good since, I think he just needed a wakeup call.

If you lift up the little plastic part that acts as a seat your stuff won't roll out.
For those employees who refuse to speak, they don't get off that easy. I ask them questions that require answers and don't stop until they reply

I honestly don't think that they're being rude. Some kids today have very poor social skills, they're latch key kids who came home from school and played video games or visited chat rooms. I think that for the most part, they really don't know that they should respond, they grew up without anyone around to respond to. And they are painfully shy. Of course some are a-holes just like adults.
