Arrow Image Posting

I'm going to need to make some changes about posting image attachments because they are getting too big and really filling up the server. This not only can make the board a little more cumbersome & slow but it can make things tough for people on dial-up lines (modems )

Hopefully within the next few weeks, I'll have a better, semi-automatic image management system working that will make things easier on us (and me )... In the meantime:

Please keep image sizes under 50K max size, preferably smaller. Use .JPG or .GIF files for the image types. If you're new to fiddlin' with images, as you get better working with them, you'll be able to easily & quickly optimize them. But here are a couple general rules of thumb for images:

Here is a fairly detailed image that is not based on a photo and is a good choice for a GIF file

Where as photos are best used as JPG files:

Both of these pictures are small, between 10-20K. They also don't take up much space in the database (which has gotten huge)...

So until the new system comes up, if everyone can please use smaller sized images with medium quality (like 60% on jpg files) with max image size of 600x600 pixels. This will be a tremendous help on working with these images....

If anyone has any questions on working with images, I'll be happy to help. I'm not a master but I can get through most image packages....

Thanks,

John

I think they're all hilarious and good pieces of work, if you want me to pull them, I will...

Nope, not a drain, not a cause of mayhem, much more of a hoot & howl when your pics go up. It's just that as time goes by, the total # of images from everyone is going way up. I want to find a better way so everyone can continue putting stuff up. Bloo, your pics are fine, they are optomized, and not huge in size. I was just using your pics for the test gallery pages, that's all... Besides, I'd be more than happy to give you your own gallery .

Really, all I'm looking to do is to find a good way to load an image on the site without it actually becoming part of the database... Not sure if this test system will work with that easily enough...

Holler if you want me to move that stuff....

John I just posted a couple.
I set the resolution around 600 x 600, but the image is still large. (my brother in law)
If I reduce the size more it gets blocky. Like the second one. (bait)
Don't know what I'm doing wrong.
\
Any suggestions?

The best thing to do with a big image that is a little blocky is to reduce the overall image size before optimizing. So if your pic was 1024x1024 and you change the IMAGE size (not canvass) to 600x600, the pic will be a little smaller but slight better in focus & detailed... Another thing which some times helps is to sharpen the image. If you have a low - med quality image to start with, it's very hard to make it much better.

The best thing to do with a digital camera is to take higher quality/bigger images to start with and then reduce them. So if you know that you want 600x600 images, take them at 1024 and shrink them AFTER you download them to your PC. This will use up more space on the camera and your computer but it will end up with better images.

The next thing is optimization. If you send a nice photo at 90% quality on a jpg, it will be huge but that same image will still look good at 60% quality and will be 1 fith the original size...

Thats what's strange, I take 1600 X 1200 from my camera.
Then when I reduce in microsoft photoeditor, they look worse.
I will try some of your suggestions, but I think that is what I have been doing.
I'll keep at it.

Thanks
V

Photoeditor sucks, have anything else? Paint Shop Pro can be downloaded from downloads.com for a trial. Then you are supposed to buy it .. I use Fireworks and Photoshop here...

We have photoshop, but not on my computer.
I can give it a try though and see if its better.

I don't have anything else on this work puter.
Except for U-lead, but that does not have any size adjustments that I have found.

At home I have MGI photosuite, I will see if it has any resize capabilities.

Thanks again.
Maybe see you at the next MSBA ?

Specialist: Thanks, I will mess around with it this weekend.

I resized one of my images here at work on photoshop and it worked great,, but for home, that program is too expensive
@ 150 $$$

Gonna try for some blues this weekend for a change. If nada then I'll hit my bass spots. Hopefully get some more nice pics to post.
