the money is in the antenna
you would be better off spending more on the antenna than worring about the radio///

I recently spent 170 for a antenna on only a clam skiff as soon as it gets loose ill buy another one/////////

ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE !!!

This season i bought a Horizon Eclipse +2002 for $149.99 at west Marine (a dangeruos place if you own a a boat} 8 ft shakesspeare galaxy antenna and an external speaker so i can hear it over the outboard. They seem to work out fine so far

Clammers right about the antenna, do you already have a VHF radio? Another possibility is finding a used, late model radio in the want ad but still dropping good money on an antenna. There are cheap ones but you get a lot more effective use with a quality, tall antenna. Sucks to need it in an emergency and your signal doesn't get out...

Radio and Antenna

I run the Raytheon 45 VHF radio, and a 8' Shakespeare Fiberglass antenna, I don't have any problems communicating and have made contact with boats around Montauk Pt, about 25-30 miles away, and gotten good radio checks.
