Sight Fishing with the Slug-Go - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

IMHO there is nothing better than watching fish attack a bait, especially if that bait is an artificial. With mostly schoolies up here on the north shore I set out with my favorite daytime lure- the white slug-go! Usually fish it ala McKenna- very eratic and rather fast along and just below the surface. I was standing above a good drop-off of about 20 ft and at the end of my retrieve I let it sink all the way to the bottom. Crystal clear water and polarized glasses allowed me to watch as bass after bass came in to take a look at this slab-o-rubber, just undulating in the current. Every time I let it sink low bass would inspect and often swipe at it. Caught a few with very little pizzazz and very little movement. Same thing today off a bridge with moving water, let it sink near the edge and schools of bass appeared. Not sure what is so appealing about the slug-go but it is far more versatile than I ever thought...

Last year on a charter on Nantucket the guide really taught me how to fish sluggos. I love them. My buddy is guiding this year and on Monday morning I was out with him. We were catching many schoolies on plugs and swimmers and then i said I was going to go a little slower and deeper with a sluggo. He rigged one as well and poked fun at me cuz I didn't have a lead head on it. He said I wasn't gonna catch with that rig. Now keep in mind this was given to me last year already rigged by the Capt out on ACK. I kept my mouth shut and took a cast waited for what seemed like hours before i retrieved and he was like dude what are doing???? The current was taking it and I was twitching it every so often. He took a few more casts while my first cast was still out there and he commented again that i wasn't gonna catch using that technique. The words were still coming out of his mouth when BAM, fish on! Got him to the boat and he measured 26". We laughed our butts off!

I caught a half a dozen schoolies last week at a spot on the North Shore with a 7.5 " bubblegum sluggo on a 3/4 oz. head. It's so curiously satisfiying when that color works. A great all-around lure that will catch all types of fish. I usally let them sink a little, give em a twitch, let em sink again, etc. The 9" ones are also great in the surf with just a 8/0 shaughnessy hook.
