Jamestown Fishing Pier Needs Your Help.....

I realize this is last minute, but if you can make this meeting, please do.

=============

IMPORTANT: READ....

RIDEM and RIDOT have been going forward with plans to construct a public fishing
pier and state park at the site of the old Jamestown Bridge. This new facility
would be called the Plum Point Fishing Pier State Park and would be the first of
it's kind for Rhode Island citizens.

This facility would provide access to Narragansett Bay for shorebound anglers,
handicapped, and regular citizens who could stroll the pier with their children
on a Sunday afternoon.

NEIGHBORS OPPOSE PIER/PARK

As expected, local residents of the Plum Point area do NOT want to see this
happen. We heard that a meeting was held last week and they vowed to fight to
stop the pier. The North Kingstown Town Council president was present and he
also reportedly vowed to fight it, and said he would get it on the next Town
Council agenda.

The agenda has been altered and it will be heard. The proposal would be to get
the town council to pass a resolution to send to the Legislature saying that
North Kingstown opposes this park.

EVEN IF YOU NEVER FISH FROM SHORE, YOU NEED TO SUPPORT THIS PUBLIC ACCESS
OPPORTUNITY

Over the years, there have only been a few times when recreational anglers have
been urged to support an important issue. THIS IS ONE OF THEM!
Rhode Island calls itself the Ocean State, yet, unlike all other states along
the coast, public access to the shore is extremely limited. We're probably the
only state on the coast without a public pier like this.

The pier design committee went out of its way to incorporate a way to satisfy
EVERY fear or objection of the neighborhood association. This pier would not
bother neighborhood residents, other than they simply don't want anyone else
using "their" bay.

If you are a North Kingstown resident, but can't attend the Town Council
meeting, AND if you support the fishing pier/state park, then you can send an
email to the members of the town council.

Tell them that you are a North Kingstown resident and that you support the
fishing pier, and that you also are entitled to their representation.

Here's their email addresses.

Edward Cooney, President
Ecooney@northkingstown.org

Council Members:
Steven Campo: scampo@northkingstown.org

Anthony Miccolis: amiccolis@northkingstown.org

John Patterson: jpatterson@northkingstown.org

Edward Whittaker: ewhittaker@northkingstown.org

I will not be able to attend but emails were sent to all.

Sir,
I am a resident of North Kingstown and I will not be able to attend the meeting due to work issues.I wanted to let my opinion be known that I support the Fishing Pier.I am a recreation fisherman and have been fishing for years. The fact that we have very limited beach access for fishing and some of the spots are dangerous it would be a great improvement. If set up right with the proper trash receptacles and a maintenance program by the town it would be a great part of this town.I've read that the traffic will not effect the locals the way it was designed.People were fishing from that bridge for years and was a great spot.Alot of family memories and big fish stories came from there.Thats when it was just an old bridge. Now with the new plans and support from the town it could be what it once was and more.I would love to be able to take my 5yr old son to a safe fishing area and give him the memories that can be passed on thru generations. Not to some place where he needs to climb on dangerous rocks or trespass in order to catch fish. Thanks for listening to my opinion.

Question

i can't blame the residents for not wanting their view looking like goat island.

i'd be all over it, though.

The pier was approved in 99. Theyre dragging their feet, exactly because of what wee wee is describing. I looked at a house on Plum Point last year, and I thought the lady showing the house was giving me her phone number, it was the asking price...

If completed, well maintained (staffed) and policed by the green cops etc. It would be fantastic, they should look at some of the setup down south Va, Fla etc. I'm sure a lot of folks wouldnt mind paying a bit of a fee etc. to take their kids porgy fishing etc in a relatively safe enviro. compared to expecting a 7 yr old to be a mountain goat to catch a few porgy.

Domination takes full concentration..
