The handhelds really suck up batteries fast, He may want to go with a mounted unit.

That being said, I've had a Magellen 315 since 2001 and it still works like a champ.

I had a Garmin for years before I bought a mounted Garmin, They are great, I bought a power cable cause as stated they use a lot of batterys, but with ther power cable the batterys were just for back up.

Can't go wrong with a Garmin!

Garmin's the way to go. Easy to use. Buy fixed mount with biggest screen you can afford.

I have a nice little handheld GPS plotter. It is a Lowrance Atlantis and was preloaded with charts and cost about 250. For me its a great back up unit.
