Spheros 8000 advise

Good day All,

I've read positive reviews of the Spheros series reels here on striped-bass.com. I'm considering getting a Spheros 8000 for local island fishing in SoCal and maybe the occasional offshore trip for schoolie tunas.

I'm considering loading the reel with 40lb spectra with a short topshot of 30lb mono or flouro.

Question: How do you all set up/rig your Spheros 8000?

Thanks for the advice!

It is a very good reel for the price. I fished my 8000 for about 3 seasons with barely no cleaning or rinsing (I know, not a smart idea) and it performed very well until the end handles braid very well, i used mine with 40# pp. Its a good reel, enjoy it.

so...............what braid or mono do you use on it? do you use backing etc.? The question was how do you rig it?

I think we all know you like the spheros by now.

One season, so far so good, but its still only one season so I have no long term opinion.

A bit of backing, and most of a 300 yard spool of 20lb fireline, to a swivel, to a leader to a breakaway clip.

When the line needs to be replaced I'm going to 14lb fireline. My buddy has the same reel with 50lb PP on it and is happy with it.

spheros

i'll sneak one more in.

i fish it with 20# berkley big game backing and 50 power pro. i carry an extra spool of 20# big game just in case i run into problems.

i exclusively fish from the surf. i dunk it alot. it holds up nice. i was fortunate to handle some 40# fish this year with it. no issues with large fish. great reel.

i may try 60 pound pp next year.
