Cod......From The Beach

Has anyone here had luck getting cod from the beach, a few years ago I had some luck from scusset beach with balls of clam and some luck at the race. I havent tried yet this year but Im thinking about it. Also if anyone has any Idea about Nantucket i am there all week so it may be worth a try.

Nantucket has, or at least had, the best white perch fishing in the world and now is the time to do it.

i've caught one or two from shore while targeting stripers early in the year the last couple seasons so there are some out there. Last year I got a keeper on a pink rigged sluggo in 4' of water - certainly unexpected.

I caught 8-10 pollack from the beach on outer cape in may about 5-6 years ago. Big school mixed right in with bass, right up in the wash.

Could never happen like that now with the seal population.

I think most of the world record (or perhaps flyrod record) white perch came from Nantucket 10-15 years ago after the similar white perch fishing in my area (Falmouth) had disappeared. I believe most came out of a pond near Sankaty (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=...layer=DRG&s=50) but there are several other tempting ponds down Miacomet/Madaket way. The guys getting them were fishing from shore, if I remember correctly. If I was over there in April I'd certainly consider taking waders and giving it a try. The tackle stores could probably steer you better than I.

I, also, have caught cod in late april fishing for stripers in the Harbor from the shore. If your going to pursue cod from the shore. You must do so after dusk. Also, good baits are squid, clams or halved or small live green crabs. Dress warm. Try ledges, points and steep drop offs. The deeper the water, the better.

Gary, when I was a kid we jigged codfish maybe 1/2 a mile off of madaket one time in early spring but that was a rare thing.

I know my dad tried bait off the beach at sankaty for cod a few times but I don't think he ever did anything and he wasn't very serious about it. The current and surf make it tough there.

As to the perch fishing, there's no bass down there (Large or small mouth) so the perch get big, so do the pickerel. I think a few of those big fish came out of long pond and more than a few large perch fell to a guy who fished in a float tube. I know there's big ones in Sesachacha too, but the only fish I ever caught in that pond were stripers that got landlocked when the pond opening closed.
There's pretty good access there on the beach side.

A couple of years ago I was on a boat codfishing around Race point and the cod were close enough to the beach that the few surf guys that were out there were catching them.

Back in the early to mid 80's we used to fish for cod at night, off the beach on plum island. I had an uncle that owned a cottage there and he turned us on to it. We used clams for bait and did pretty well. But it has been many years since my last trip and I couldn't guess what would be happening now. But I bet it would still be just as cold!

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day ...
show him where to fish and ... you'll be sorry

i never have, but i witness luds catch a monster cod from shore some years ago. it was funny because he thought he was stuck on the bottom initially. but then the bottom fought back. it was pretty cool.
