Let's net some herring

Now before everyone starts freaking out and telling me it's illegal let me explain.

There is a run in E. Providence that was dammed decades ago. The dam is a good 12 feet high and there is no fish ladder. The only reason the run is still going is because of people who have netted the herring and tossed them over the dam. The DEM has plans to put ladders in...but who know when that may actually happen.

I need people who can volunteer to help net them at this spot over the next month.

Netting them isn't easy...or even that safe. Like I said, the dam is about 12 feet high and there is a lot of water going over it this time of year. You have to climb down these big slabs to get down to the water, and you are somewhat pinned against a stone wall about 3' from the water.

I found out last year it's a project that really needs three people to be effective, but the more people the less work it is...so if you think you may be interested in helping out let me know.

DEM

I've volunteered on that effort with RISAA. Another thing to consider is that technically you need DEM permission. Steve Medeiros had to submit every name of the people who were volunteeering each day. And yes, they came and checked. I'd hate to see you get in trouble for trying to do a good deed.

"The DEM has plans to put ladders in..."

Forgive my ignorance...

But what do you mean by "ladder"?

DEM = Department of Environmental Management? Is this federal or state?

Can we plug the political machine and get the "ladder" in place as a long term solution?

yes i have a permit to net them at omega dam.

the way the they have it regulated one of us 13 permit holders has to be there. I have to call the DEM to let them know when we will be netting them, and document how many we get.

Are there any civil engineers in this community?

I am a "think outside the box" problem solver and hence I am curious what it would take to design and build a fish ladder for this location.

Food for thought.

Take care,
Fish360.
