It's because parents are too stupid to make sure their kids are dressed warmly enough to stand out waiting for the bus.
I can't tell you the number of times I walked to school back in Iowa when it was well below zero.

Stupid or powerless? One second kid is bundled up ready to go, turn your back, hear the door open and close and now the coat, hat etc. is in the closet, in the bushes, in the shed, doghouse, etc. I cant believe how I see kids dressed (under dressed) on my way to work in the am, especially the girls, but boys too, in SHORTS sometimes. Parents are probably already gone, on their way to work. 2 paychecks pretty much mandatory to live in this neck of the woods. Being warm and free from frostbite must be the most uncool thing going these days... Then again, how warm do they need to dress when the bus stops at every house and little Johnny just has to go door to bus? But that's another rant altogether...

you are correct. Kids are no different than adults. No one in RI wears heavy coats etc anymore. I hear things like It's too warm in the store and school and I only have a short walk to school or the store and don't want to deal with a big coat. I see idiots wearing shorts and t shirts all winter.
I wear a heavy coat, I always seem cold. maybe I am getting old.

Still remember the call I got about 20+ years ago from my stepsons 2nd grade school...he showed up on a snow day wearing his slippers and no socks! I know his mother had him dressed like an Eskimo before he left. Sorels and snowsuits were obviously not "cool" even in the 2nd grade.

How many times did you get into a fight with your mom as a kid about wearing those dorky galoshes with the snap buckles? Then you had to take a clothespin with you to school, so you could keep them pinned tgether in the corridor outside the classroom.
Can you even buy clothespins today?

My Mum rolled my socks over my pants and then I put my buckle up goloshers on, my wife on the other hand grew up in the Fairmount Projects Waterbury,Ct walked to school back 4 lunch & then home at the end of the day ( I've driven the route 4.7 miles)
if you know the area all hills My wife had no supervision no winter clothes cardboard bottom shoes socks for gloves if she could she could get them there 5 girls in the family and get this Her Father would tell them he wished he had BOYS , He found a family in the projects with 5 boys the Lamottas and gave them a ride to school
and bought them nice presents .
But the winter time was the worst for her the rest of her sisters
and the girls became very independent and this has made my WIFE a very strong and careing person.
this is not BS I'm so happy to that She came into my life 30 plus years ago

My grandson (2nd grade student) loves wearing the Sorel winter boots so much. His teacher sent a note home asking my daughter to please pack some sneakers for him to change into. He doesn't want to unless they have gym class. The teacher says he's disturbing all the other classrooms because you can hear him walking from the other end of the school.

Some men have quickly forgotten that if not for the sacrifice a woman made (specifically their mother) that they would not even be walking on this Earth. I have absolutely no respect for them.

So instead of having the parents of children who wait for the bus adjust their schedules so they can keep their kids warm, let's %$%$%$%$ up everyone's schedules. %$%$%$%$ing Cranston School System is really pissing me off. Had to go into work late yesterday because of that huge snowstorm we got overnight and the fact that they cancelled school for Thursday at 5pm on %$%$%$%$ING Wednesday, now I see that school is cancelled for tomorrow. Well now it's bring the kids to work day tomorrow. This state doesn't know it's a$$ from it's elbow.

I'll tell you what was worse, especially when you got into junior high and coolness became even more critical--that "This Is My Mighty Mac" label inside your coat.
