i need some advise - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

i have 3 different reels i want to load up a 113 h,114hl 6/0,and a long beach 60 i need advise on wire,lead core,and heavy fishing with the 114 what would you do with these reels john im coming to the maintaince thing should i wait for that,before putting these together and if so i need to know what to order for these such as backings, braids, really any help would be appreciated!!! on the 114 it holds 475 yds #50 should i put 50#braid on this and really spool it up for bigger type fishing small tuna ect!!!

heres what i have planned the 114 all braid 600plus yds of #50 the 113 braid backing i dont know what # to use then put lead core,the 60 was going to be for braid backing then wire and i dont know nothing about wire never used it so what #would you use for backing and wire!!!!

For backing I use cortland 50# and the wire 40#

I'm no expert on the subject but I'll tell you what I know.

The best way to learn fishin wire is to have someone show you or things can get pretty ugly. As you know that technic works great when water temps are up and fish are deep. If I remember correctly, for every foot of dept=10 of wire, most spool with 300ft. I also use two rod lengths of mono leader to witch is seperated by a barrel swivel. Early spring wire works great trolling live bait, bunker or herring in and around holes. You MUST pay attendtion letting out wire. Thumbing the spool as its being let out is key. Let your bait down easy and let the current or motion of the boat take the wire off your thumb.

Mr Macey - those 4/0 & 6/0 reels might be a bit bigger than anything else for that party - anyone going have experience with those reels?

Wait til after you go to the seminar to make a decision. Take a ride to CMS in New Bedford some day when Erik is working. Bring the reels, ask questions, get line spooled, buy stuff. thank him. Easy

They know Tuna there and can be very helpful.

I would think for small tuna, you would want backing made of braid, then heavy enough mono, then flouro leader. But before you go setting that up for those tuna in the fall, you could set it up as backup for trolling even though it is a bigger reel than neccessary.

I have 2 4/0 penns John, however I always left them off to be cleaned, it's easier.

the 114 is going to be strickly big fish i want to fish for sharks and tuna when striper season slows i would love to fight a mako i have spinners for plugs and the other two for trolling i might just set the 60 with braid so i can bottom fish chunks and squid for those fluke wire seams complicated john all these reels are brand new i need someone that knows how to spool them the right way i could also go to new bedford like slip said and get them done any word about eba if tickets are gonna be at door!!!

This is mostly all I do once the herring are gone...
Buy a 49L Penn....Has the side plates of a 6/0 but is much thinner...Because of the large diameter pulls in alot of wire per crank...has good drag...
Have landed lots of 40+ fish at trolling speed and have been able to control everyone.
Wire...INCONEL...Way softer than the monel was...have not had a $100 birds nest since I switched.
Reels are cheap...I put the large penn handles on.
Holds enough wire with backing to troll in 90 ft.
My 2 cents.
