i was thinking about trying to make some cod jigs this weekend. i was looking at i jig in a shop a few weeks back, and it basically looked like a piece of chromed pipe with lead poured in. anyone have any experience/tips on this subject? thanks.

Yes all you need is chromed or nickel plated pipe. We melt the lead and pour it down the pipe you need something to keep the pipe upright. DO NOT HOLD WITH YOUR HANDS! We then make angle cuts with a saw and drill holes and add hardware. Very easy to make.

what do you use as a stopper on the bottome end of the pipe when you fill it with the lead? thanks.

If your brave you can just stand them up or we have an old cap that was used on some lead pipes. We cut them down close to finished length, stand them up and pour. Then angle cut them afterwoods.

i love those jigs, cod bombs right? i got one similar to those in a mass bass meeting raffle a while ago. havent got to use it yet but hopefully soon.

Nice cod jigs. It looks as though you are painting them reather than chroming them. Anything to share with that? How well do they compare, what colors are most effective, etc? Have you tried the Rustoleum chrome spray paint. If you topcoated it with Envirotex or Flexcoat after painting you might get a durable chrome type finish.

What did you make the molds from?

where can a mold for those type of jigs be found? i saw jigs very similar to those in a few shops this weekend, but not the molds. thanks.

Christian is right - they are Cod Bombs - by Sea Wolfe Tackle. Don't know the rules so I won't paste a link - but I'm sure you intelligent good looking people can figure it out

Best part about it is you can buy the jig bodies as components and finish them as desired. I'm trying both epoxy over paint and plating (a do it yourself plating project was a bust - but I've got a BIL that's a machinist - he's got a little weekend project coming up and he don't even know it !)

Can't coat Rustoleum Chrome paint, It turns grey. It's because the paint has actual silver leaf pigment in it.

well, i have a pile of lead so i'm looking for a mold if it is available. if not, the plain jigs might work.

Don't worry about plain lead jigs, they work pretty good. Capt. Tim Tower that runs the BunnyClark out of Maine uses nothing but plain lead jigs and does just fine. When your down 200+ feet I don't think the cod can tell what color the jigs are the are attracted to the flutter and movement.

Best paint so far is the R Metallic series - the gloss silver is sweet
I also liked the R Hammered finish - medium blue

I'm using a glitter too - Its called Disco Glitter. Looks white in the container but when you move it looks red, blue and silver - very cool and similates a baitfishes lost scales pretty well.

All this having been said . . . I agree with Canalrat - it don't make a snot bit of difference down 250' . . . but its a way to pass time.

my cod bomb is phosphorescent. that should make a difference. ive had good luck with teasers that glow in the past too, especially for haddock compared to regular colors. i cant wait till my next trip. just got some pipe jigs yesterday.

Hi I make those jigs for myself and I sell some as well. The easiest way to do it and it's pretty cheap is to buy some aluminum tubing eith 1/2 or 5/8" and get the polished stuff. Then just stand the tube on a cement pad and hold with a welding glove or several layers of non flamable cloth. you pour the lead with a pointed ladle. and fill the tube. then cut on an angle I use my band saw with a matal blade. apply a nice stainless 10/0 split ring and I use the mustad 3549D 8/0 dressed with a pink hootchie skirt.

Made a bunch from bicycle handle bars. Cut to your desired legnth. Crimp one end in a vise and fill with lead. Crimp the other end in the vice. Split rings or on the end for hooks or swivels. Have a bunch like that.
