Just a heads up. On ESPN2 tomorrow at 8:30 am. Byron Velvick will be surf fishing with Gary "the Toad" in Montauk. Should be good for some laughs. Gary's a real character if you've never met him

I saw the teaser for it last sunday. Im looking forward to it, its always nice to see something in the surf. Id like to a see a show on rooster fishing in costa rica.

Speaking of Costa Rica, I booked a trip for this coming March. Going to Quepos. Booked a sailfish boat for fly fishing through the Parador Hotel, a very top notch Hotel, not a fishing lodge. I recommend this hotel highly to those who want to combine fishing with other pass-times including white water rafting, jungle tours, kayaks, fine dining and just sipping margaritas in the many infinity pools overlooking the Pacific. Go to Parador.com...... check it out. Not your typical family resort.

Anyway, I bought a 4 piece St Croix surf rod with Shimano Saragosa, loaded with 40 braid to bring with me to fish the beaches and shoreline when not on the offshore charter. Bringing my bag, filled with plugs, tins, bucks and shads. Hopefully will hook into a cubera or rooster, which are known to live along the rocky coasts and surf.

Have hooked sails on fly......which to me is novelty fishing, but enjoyable especially with my wife on board. But really looking forward to exploring some shorelines with my new outfit.

Any advice is welcome as I never fished the beaches down there, off the coast of Quepos.

That show was pretty cool. I wish the fishing was a bit better in montauk. He got pretty excited for a 16" fish, probably the same way i felt with my first striper. The shark fishing was awesome. That has the makings of a road trip written all over it. If its in our off season. Anybody know what time of year the shark fishing happens down there and what kind of sharks they were catching?

Anyone catch the show right before: the sturgeon fishing on the Columbia? 10+ft, 600lb fish brought alongside the boat.

I thought the show sucked. Will never watch it again. To compare North East Striped Bass fishing to South Carolina's blitzing sharks was a joke. Just shows you who that guy really is. He's an actor and a neophite fisherman a slippin + slidin on the south side rocks in calm daytime surf. "Give that man a rat bass. He deserved it"

At least it won't attract more idiots to the North East. Hope they all wind up casting to blitzing blacktips.

I missed the first 10 minutes so I missed the Toad.

I watched the next show which was Bone fishing with Tom Brokaw, the late great Lefty Kreh, Yvon Chouinard, (the owner of Patagonia), Michael Keaton the actor and some author. Very Very rich guy fly fishing stuff but absolutely beautiful photography and really classy. I understand bonefishing is a huge industry.

What a contrast to that guy how did not even know how to cast in Hilton Head. Lefty could cast.

They had to know what they were in store for, Ed. It didn't look like they stayed more than a day shooting that. I was kinda bummed that it ended up being about 10 minutes of Montauk.

Saw the show. Doesn't matter what he caught in Montauk or not. It's Montauk and if you've ever been there you know how it is.

I've never met that "Toad" guy but I really thought his love of fishing and his fanaticism came out and it was genuine. I also like that when the host made some comment about how great he(the toad) was that he basically said whatever. That's refreshing in the striped bass fishing scene when it comes to guys that get on TV or get other publicity. I saw more true love of fishing than ego. I also thought that it was great that they showed the host and the toad get beat up pretty good for a small bass and a bluefish. There are plenty of days like that that come along with the few really good days/nights for me. Pretty good use of 10 minutes if you ask me.

The main thing I took away was that I need a multicolored Van Staal. I'm not talking about just switching out a handle an/or spool. Those things had black bodies with gold side plates etc. Very fashionable IMO
