So, do we fish this storm?
I've had some great days fishing big water, big surf. Usually just before or after a storm. But this is looking to combine with another low currently up around Syracuse, and could linger a bit. We are exposed to the NE, and get some huge surf when it comes out of that direction. I poked around scouting 1 1/2 hour before and after high tide, but it was too much water. And too much weed. Where there wasn't weed, it was cloudy from the sand getting churned up. I am still jonseing to fish, but when is it going to be optimal?

As soon as it gets back in control, water clears slightly and that nice controlled rolling swell is coming in. All the creatures are bruised up and easy pickings. Once it gets to be 2-3 footers it can be really good in my experience.
If you had to fish now, as if you were stuck on an island due to ferrys not running, I would fish bottom of the drop as it always seems to lay down or up around an inlet.

Fish the beaches with big fresh clams right after the storm.

I'll be out tonight. Got a spot that should set up perfectly in these conditions.

Old school, but makes so much sense... Thanks. I would not have thought of it. The beach I'm going to target had a couple dozen surfers in the water yesterday though...

Seriously old school, but so freakin' effective. Last half of the incoming through the first half of the outgoing. A little birdie told me there was a BIG run on fresh clams the last 2 days at a south shore bait shop.

Happy that I rolled the dice and went out last night for a solo trip. Ended up with 5 fish to 37 pounds.

Heavy drag testing weed up here... But did salvage a poly sailing row boat out of the surf in good shape. I think it's going to be a few days... Toby, I'm jealous...

I'm going to fish a spot from shore in the next nite or 2 I scoped out during comm. season up against a sandy beach. Could be real promising with this wind direction. Besides I got nutin better to do being on vacation during this lovely weather we are having.

Storm or no, I just had to get on a beach: I picked Wood End--150 miles round trip. Wind at my back. Everything south of that obviously blown out avalanche conditions. Great fun and solitude, but not a single rat blue or short bass for the effort.
Spent some discretionary income on gas, dinner on the way back, and more unnecessary tackle at Blackbeards in Eastham. Makes me remember the dozens of long distance fisherman I meet yearly around the Canal who two or three team it and drive five hours one way from even as far away as NJ to fish a tide and contribute $$$ substantially to the local economy and U.S. GNP in general...or the flyfisherman who consistently would drive 2.5 hrs. one way from Spfld. to fish a favorable night tide at Scorton's.
THIS is the real economic value of this accessible to ALL the public, public resource striped bass fishery. Make striped bass a gamefish.

Just got in from a short session all by myself at a local reef. Had a good clearing of weedless water to cast into. Saw fish breaking in between the waves, and they came within range as the tide dropped. Had four between 28-30". Lost two, one of which straightened out the belly treble on a SS needle. Good fun landing them in big water. Same as Paul said; good to surf fish again after fishing the boat for most of the summer...
Still howling out of the north up here. Glad I went though.

nice ross.
too long of a ride for me to go for hit or miss big water fishing, especially with the baby.
did some prep work for the rest of the season instead. we'll see how many I actually get to use - wife is going back to work first week in september so I'll be spending alot of nights with the baby (no more sneaking out after they both go to bed) for a few weeks until we get her hours reduced.
