How much do they usually run? I have a questionable tree that I might drop on account of the storm coming up?

Normal size tree, 50' tall or so??

Depends on obstructions,, like structure or power lines. Also, if its oak they'll often times charge less to sell the wood. One guy in the area mills pine and his prices are cut throat compared to most. Get as many estimates as ya can. 50' maple that needs a boon truck $750 is my guess

maples are not typically a shallow rooted tree
but depending on its age, thats the criteria to look at
if it's regularly dropping bigger branches then it's gettin old.

anyone can drop a tree... missing wires and houses
is the tricky part...

Pretty much dead on... Boom is money, but takes less time than if climbing. One man in bucket, one or two on ground. Chipping up brush, etc. You can save if you have them leave wood where it falls. Get them to cut in stove lengths. That is if you can get someone between now and Sunday......

I've gotten two estimates in the last week for a huge oak tree that must be done by climbers: $2200 and $2100. Waiting for the third estimate and then.........

To be extra safe, probably worth checking on their insurance and licenses too. One of the companies that came to my house gave me all the contact info to check these things. I guess a lot of companies cut corners.

John, your trees were big the last time I was in you hood, so I'm sure they are ginourmous by now. Won't be cheap. Oaks start to deteriorate once they get a certain size and what looks liek a big strong tree isn't.

What Goose said is accurate, around my neck of the woods it is about $1200.00 to get them there with a crane, chipper, and chainsaws.

I agree, check for insurance and get references.
We had a locust tree cut down a couple years back.
It was at least 50' tall, and the truck was a good 4-5' around.
The company we went with charged $600, but we had them leave the bigger branches and truck and we cut that up for firewood.
We still have some of the wood leftover to this day.

If you want to keep the wood for burning, it may cost a little less than average, since they won't have to haul it away, but if they have someone that is looking for wood (to burn) and you don't want it, you may be able to strike a deal as well.
