Water Search For Missing Kayaker Suspended - Swampscott, MA Patch

Doesn't sound good...

I always wonder what would possess a person to venture our on rough seas/surf WITHOUT proper safety gear?
Most that don't succumb to the seas have the same generic response: "I didn't think it would be that bad!"

I wear a PFD every time I venture out in my kayak.
Reason: You don't really wear a PFD for when you fall out of your kayak and have to climb back in/on, you wear it mainly for when you fall out (or knocked out) and you can't get back in/on/to the kayak because of wind, waves or being unconscious!

Sure, it may be a little bulky or screw up your perfect tan, but it sure beats having to have someone identify the body after a few days underwater.

Sure it's gruesome, and nobody wants to hear such negative comments when there may still be hope that a person has survived, but if the person took the proper precautions, they would usually be able to tell their story in person. '

I wear my PFD from the first trip in the spring up until the last trip before it goes into storage! I also demand my friends and relatives get into the habit of wearing them when they go kayaking.

Anyway, I was hoping for the best in this story, but after hearing all the facts/reports, I don't see much hope of this person surviving if he hasn't been found already.

Remember to play safe, so you can continue to play again!!!

Definitely thoughts and prayers go out on this one.

I do agree with FT, this sounds like the height of unpreparedness and just a blatant disregard for potential dangers involved.

It's the same reason why inexperienced swimmers get caught by the rip currents every year ... no understanding of the strength and no respect for the power of the water ... ignorance - be it from too young or just too dumb ... it's sad, but people don't take the time to learn or are not taught to learn and understand it.

true

fear of swimming/drowning is something learned
as newborn babies swim just fine having a clean slate
with absolutely no fear installed on their hard drive.

Body Discovered Off Marblehead Coast - Marblehead, MA Patch

I am assuming it will be the body of the missing kayaker.... Very sad whoever it is. But if it is him, it is amazing to me how close the body was recovered to where he went missing back on September 9th....especially after the north northwest we had this weekend

It's him. When you drown, you sink. Then as you decpose, you will float. Warmer water will get a body to float in a week or 2. Colder water.. 3 to four

I would assume in some strange way that this news is comforting to his family and friends. I would think it would be tough to have a loved one die, but never have a body turn up.
